He lost me at use bird shot for home defense.
-
Did someone write something about birdshot for self-defense? Maybe point blank on the chest, neck, or brain bucket will stop someone. Other than that, it will just piss them off and make them in a lot of pain, but it certainly is NO guarantee it will stop a serious threat. There are hundreds of articles out there where a homeowner unloaded birdshot on a violent breaking an entering type thug, and he was perfectly fine and was able to walk out fine, just in a crap load of pain. My point is that it just doesn't stop a threat like buck shot or even a slug will. Stick with SBR rifles if you can, SBS shotguns with buckshot or slugs for self-defense, pistol rounds as a second option, IMHO, and never put birdshot in there, just don't do it. Its not a proper self-defense round, IMHO. From what I have read and researched.

i saw a guy take a load of number 8 to the leg
bled to death before the paramedics got there

I've seen a guy bleed to death by getting a point blank shot of bird shot to the chest, so what is your point?
Not to mention it didn't take him out of the fight. He could still be a threat to you as he lay on the ground and bled out. Doesn't mean some guy on drugs or a hell of a lot more tough could not have kept fighting and been a threat after being shot in the leg. Self-Defense shooting is about ending the threat.

now, now....
the point of this wasn't to argue over the effectiveness of birdshot, if you recall from the OP:

I just thought that the pump system is a speedier system than most people give it credit for.
-
Dude was pretty quick with that pump gun.
All the same I am going to agree with EJR, 30 is more than 8 and I find a carbine to be handier than a shotgun.
-
Personally, I'd never allow anyone to "bleedout" no matter what I shot them with. If have to shoot you once, you're worth shooting again. I understand they made this video as a representation of what one could do, IF they needed to...
I wouldn't not shoot anyone with a shotgun or any other undesirable (to me) firearm to save my ass..
but sure as shit I'd rather a M4, Scar, or AK that's for sure.

Derp.

Nice beard! :))
-
@ thehipsterprepper, he meant it as a double negative. Hes saying he would use any gun if he had to.

I think everyone should review Mett-tc
And as always the situation dictates for me heavy woods looking like vietnam a shotgun really is a must. Slugs and heavy buck are needed to tear through palm teees and scrubs. I have said it before. I will not leave the wire with out a shotgun somewhere in my crew. Even if that means I have to carry it
You cant really take away from amount of firepower or rounds either cause each shell holds more than one projectile. The only time your really at a round count disatvantage is with slugs and at that point you have the win on weight and force delivered.
I have actually been meaning to have this talk quite some time now. I have always felt that a select number of individuals here pretty much sideline a very key asset to the fight. Shotguns are not some inaccurate piece of crap lead thrower. They are very effective if used correctly. Mindyou the shooter does their part.

I agree reaver. And as you said the shooter does his part. With a shotgun training is even more important then a rifle. Its the hardest platform to shoot to its full potential.

I damn sure aint a master. I'm fast and accurate. Don't know if I told you guys but I stood right behind the NY state champion ( Former ) in busting skeet & trap. Only lost by three on the towers.
But I lack at the speed reloading.
-
Thats pretty cool reaver [URL=http://www.smileyvault.co
Also with a shotgun its pretty easy to operate a loaded shotgun decently. Aslong as you have good recoil management and are use to operating the action theres not much difference between a good shotgunner and a poor one shooting at stationary targets. But once the gun Starts running out of ammo youve got problems if you didnt train. I cant really talk on how the poor shooter does against moving targets that shoot back since ive never been there... luckily..

They sure as hell used shotguns in Vietnam for that very reason.

I agree, with you there. However, now they make shotguns that are magazine fed, instead of through a tube. However, Tactical shotgun with a tube is a very fine skill and it is also very difficult to perfect and to do well. To me, magazine fed semi-autos are easy. A shotgun with a detachable magazine is the best of both worlds for CQB or in the jungles and thick cover, IMHO.

Yeah i suppose the mag fed shotgun takes the edge off...But i dont even know how youd do a slug change over in one of those. Im sure theres a way, But the fact that you still have ammo selection, Heavyish recoil, Knowing your pattern, etc etc... its still not such an easy system when compared to perhaps an AR.
-
Yep ARs are easy, but even with ARs there is different types of ammo. There are fairly easy ways to do a change over in one of those, however, its going to be different than with the tube.
