Title: How many rounds are you Putting in AR mags?
Post by: Grudgie on September 12, 2012, 07:53:23 AM
I'm practicing mag changes and am wondering if I should put 30 rounds or the recomended 27 in an AR mag. With 30 rounders you just have to get an extra tap on the but to make sure it's seated. With Tulla ammo 26 rounds seems to be the magic number.

So let's hear your thoughts. How many rounds are you huys puttng in AR mags?

If you're running mag changes make sure your bolt is back so you don't dent the top case... ask me how I know  [img]http://www.arrse.co.uk/at

28 rounds.

full 30 in aluminium and pmags.
The steel mags are a little harder to seat but i added a tap in my manual of arms when using them.
I only plan on using my aluminium mags in neg temperatures and when i run out of loaded pmags

I max out everything I have always, always have always will.

They don't give you a 30 rounder for no reason if they wanted you to short your self a few they would have made it a 32-33 rounder and told you to short your self.

I'd be interested in this too. Not that I have an AR or anything  :-X

Back when I had my Mini-14 I was loading them up all the way, and aren't Mini and AR mags virtually the same minus how they clip into the gun?

They are both double stack detachable mags but thats where similarity ends.

You know it's funny you say that JM My Glock 17 Preban mag is supposed to be 17 capacity. I can cram 19 rounds in there if I use the 115 and 18 if I use anything else.

I like it. Still hasn't failed me. Love it.

Pull bolt back a tad and FEEL that theres a round chambered with your finger. This way you can see theres a round chambered in the dark or even if your prone and dont want to move to check visually.

EDIT: Nevermind ignore my post i saw press check and ignored the mag part, I have no clue wtf that is. lol

i run the full 30. i've found that I don't need to smack the floorplate of the mag if I just ram the shit out of it in the first place. that's just the mags that I currently have, I can't speak for other people's mags and/or rifles.

that being said, I'm with you Reaver. I'm the same way, I always max out everything. whether it's "necessary" or not. I keep everything I have loaded and locked in my cabinet, bolt actions, shotguns, .22lr... everything, lol. I just don't like the idea of rushing over to the gun cabinet and having to ask myself "oh shit, which shotgun is loaded??!!" shit on that, just load every damn thing I own to max capacity and it doesn't matter wtf I grab.

Same.

just to verify, I don't ever keep anything in the chamber of any of my guns. whether they're locked away or not, that's just a little too risky for me. the only time I ever run anything "hot" is the glock in my truck. I trust myself not to screw up, but I don't trust anyone else.

sry for the thread hijacking... as you were, gentlemen.

A full mag, the top round is right side.
Insert magazine, chamber a round.
Pull the mag and feel what side the round is on.
If the top round is now on the left, a round has been chambered.

I check this way because it's easier that fiddling around and trying to
feel the round in the chamber or insuring that you went back into battery after the check.

That's why if I download, I do it by 2. Top round is always right side.

Ah yes, that sounds familiar now. Chamber press check i suppose is better suited for bolt actions where going into battery is a sure thing after the check.

But if you upload it by two won't it still be on the right?

Some mags are different too, when I did the RNC we where given two mags of ten & one ended on the right the other on the left. I varified the round count cause I wasn't getting the shaft on a missing bullet. Turns out they both had ten, one was a colt mag the other a Ray ind. Both are surplus mags issued to the army but because they where manufactured differently the stack was different.

Seemed odd to me but I had all ten so I forgot about it till now.  [URL=http://www.smileyvault.co

Yes. But in my previous post, I said I downloaded my GI mags and not my Pmags.
I only us D&H GI type mags. I don't mix and match and I don't load a whole 30 into the GI mags.

I'm wondering why. Is it because GI mags are a little tighter to insert when full? Or are you trying to preserve spring life?

I find GI mags harder to insert on a closed bolt. I just prefer to download vs. smash them in.

I run only PMAGS and 30, all the way full.  Always have, and I've never had a PMAG failure, ever.  Even if we were shooting SHIT poorly reloaded rounds.  IMHO, PMAGS really are the shit.   [URL=http://www.smileyvault.co

I think it is more about, if life or death came down to a mag change and the mag slides to the ground after you close the bolt, you might wish you downloaded a few rounds.

Maybe I'm a little slow...but I'm not getting what your trying to say?

That my mags won't drop free because I have 30 rounds in it? I dunno elaborate please.

In my particular scenario the AR operator released the empty mag and went to insert a new 30 rounder which unfortunately was not seated when he closed the bolt thus, the mag falls to the ground and the operator is shot. The moral of the story is that if the mag had been loaded down to 28 rounds, it would have been seated properly and saved his life.

I don't know who built your AR but if your bolt is open and you insert a mag and it doesn't stick... you should probably find a new one. I have never heard of that happen. The only time anything like that can remotely happen is when the bolt is closed and the inserter ( new word lol ) doesn't use enough ass to seat the mag.

I've never reloaded a fresh 30 round full PMAG into my mag well and it didn't properly seat, not once, bolt open or closed, honestly.

But then again, I slam those 30 round full PMAGs into that mag well like a Porn Star Rams it home really hard.

I've always done it the same way and even with GI mags I've never really had a problem... Didn't we have a Blog Tv on the same damn subject?

I did replace all my GI followers with no-tilt Pmag followers though. That is another redeeming quality.
