This was a great article....one of the more comprehensive studies.  Thanks for posting.

Interesting. My brand of choice in 9mm is Hornady 135 gr Critical Duty. Did OK.

I shoot either Federal Hydra Shocks or Speer Gold Dot depending on which gun I am carrying.  I chose them based on some earlier testing that was done.  I use 124gr Gold Dots in my guns with shorter than 4" barrels, otherwise I use 124gr Hydra Shocks.  It is nice to see as test this comprehensive. Being that this test was run with a short barreled gun (I assume 3") it would be interesting to see the results using a std size (4-5" barrel) gun to see if there are variation.

According to this test I may want to reconsider the Hydra Shocks.  :o

Hydra Shocks may not be the best on the list, but I suspect they would do the job if called upon.  I carry Gold Dots in wheelguns too.

If you need a second magazine, its time to call in air support.

I'll stick with my Winchester Rangers (formerly Black Talon). In over 30 autopsies I've been to after they were issued, I can attest to their performance.

Buffalo bore has a 9mm load, 124gr gold dot bullet going 100fps slower than gold dot's 125gr 357mag load. Haven't tried it out yet, but it's likely going to be my new favorite defense load.  :shoot:

That would be a potent round.  But how controllable would it be.

I think I would rather have something a bit lighter for better second round on target speed than potency of this one.

I have yet to fire any, from reviews I'm told it doesn't have any more recoil than a +p load

All of the above will hurt stuff if you hit stuff. I really took no thought to "effectiveness" when I went with Hornady 124gr XTP custom. I went to the store and asked to see the various 9mm defense rounds. I ditched the expensive ones and then I looked at the rounds. I wanted a round that looked like the bullet could handle being chambered a lot without deforming. Then I narrowed it down to the one that met that standard, was the cheapest, and had a few boxes available. And Hornady 124 XTP Custom won.

I use winchester T standard pressure ammo for my .45 autos and the 127 gr +P in 9mm. Have also started playing around with the extreme penetrators form Lehigh and Underwood in 9mm & .45 auto. Have not tried the new defenders yet.

I just cycled out my carry ammo today and shot out the old stuff at the range. It was about 1.5 years in the magazines old. No issues.

So I went to buy new carry ammo. Hornady has come out with a new wrapper for one of their decades old defense ammo loads similar to what they did with the zombie loads. It's called "American gunner" and is the standard XTP bullet in either 115gr or 124gr +P loads. The box is shiny and covered in red white and blue flag stuff. I mistakingly (the chick behind the counter fucked up and so did I for trusting her) ended up with one box of each rather than 2 matching boxes. Since it's the same ammo and I haven't heard of the box the ammo came in being the cause of any malfunctions(and I only shoot glocks :) )I'm going to forgo shooting $50 worth of the ammo to verify that it runs OK.

I am however going to buy a second box of one load or the other. Maybe I'll shoot a few of the +P and see if it has noticeably more recoil. If not I'll get a second box of that.
