Homemade Well Pump
« on: October 05, 2016, 11:01:57 AM »
Anyone have any experience making a hand operated well pump?

I'm in research mode right now and from what I can tell it can be made for way less than you can buy them for.

My well is somewhere between 75 and 100', and I think i can make one that will work inline with my electric pump.

I used to be a engineer at a contracting company (not i'm a Systems Engineer / IT Manager), but I have a Bridgeport milling machine that i'm setting up int he next month or so when i get my garage done, and i'm hoping this will be a successful winter project.

ANy actual experience input would be great! Or just resources / links, etc.

With absolutely no engineering education or experience and just thinking about the ones I have used in the past-- seems you would need a one way valve in the bottom of the suction chamber where the pump piston lifts. Then a gasket (leather on ones I have used) to seal the suction chamber to the lift and a one way valve to put the water out.

Lehmans have several designs that will give you lots of ideas.

Or you could just get a rope and use what I call a well torpedo.  See link below.

If you need a second magazine, its time to call in air support.

I know the well bucket would work, but the idea is to have "running" water inside the house, accessible from inside the house. I plan to make one that Ts off the well line on the inside of the house.

What you first described is basically more or less what i'm looking at doing, I'm just curious if anyone on here has tried and run into roadblocks, because with the correct seals and flapper (check valve), it seems like this is doable.

Bet bet-- go to Lehmans.  Buy 3.  One for use.  One for backup.  One for barter.

Then disassemble one to measure and design your own.

Lehmans is a good option.

As we all know the lift is the challenge. You may want to look for a 12 volt or 24 volt pump to use. A solar panel and 2 deep cycle 12 volt batteries (In parallel "12 volt' or in series "24 Volt").

Here is a link for a 24 volt with a 35' lift. Not enough I know.

There is also a gas powered pump. Fill a drum or tank once a week and then use gravity or a 12 volt pump water system like I did here.

Solar is a good option - i'm looking into that for other stuff but i think i'd rather have a hand pump that I know will always work for water retrieval.

Swampy and I measured my well and it's only 55ft to the bottom, 12ft to water level.

I got a quote from bisonpumps.com, and i think i'm going to go that route - i know 2 other guys who have their pumps and they work very well. High quality also.

Thinking about getting this well seal:

That way I should be able to run the hand pump pipe, and just have everything sitting there ready to go
