To many EMP stories
« on: January 20, 2016, 07:43:10 PM »
Every time I read a post on an EMP they say to build a Faraday cage for your electronic devices like a cell phone or lap top. Why? They will be useless because the microwave towers will be fried and more than likely the geosynchronous satellites will also be fried. The only reason I could think of doing the cage thing would be if you had survival information stored in them. Radios, ham radios and walkie-talkies being the exception.
Another theory is, If it is not turned on nothing will happen to it. Your car and generator will start up. :what:
To be honest I don’t know what to believe.   :suicide:

A small cage, with some flash drives or scan disk things.  An old phone to read them and a shoebox  triple wrapped with foil.  Cost you $50 and you could be "da man" after it all occurs.  Or not and you just dinner for some bunch of cannibals who move into your neighborhood because your solar panels are not working because you cannot figure out how to properly tilt then on an ongoing basis to charge the batteries for your electric fence.

If you need a second magazine, its time to call in air support.

One thing I'm not and that is TECH savey. My electronics consist of a TV and a PC. My GPS is called a MAP. No I don't own a cell phone, I feel I'm to important and don't want to be bothered and if you want to get in touch with me call the house when I'm home.  :sarcasm:
Seriously I never gave that a thought, about the memory sticks.

Dayum JoJo, I wish I could convince the wife to let me not have a cell phone.

We use to call a cell phone "a leash."  ;)

I do have a cell phone as I use it for my small business. More often than not, I forget it though when I go out

Yeah JoJo, over the years I have saved a lot of things to memory sticks. I estimated that I have close to 2,000 books & films (Mostly DIY and How to books). I also have periodicals and classics.

If the grid goes down and or a EMP hits, I will use the laptop as my Encyclopedia Britannia and entertainment.

i do have a cell phone.but i rarely use it,or the house phone.but yet i think some sort of electronic communication would be nice at least at first.like hand held cb and/or ham raido.and haveing a flash drive or memory stick and cd's with the needed info, like how to's on them is a great idea.on acount.it's to easy for a person not to remember everything.

I had thought about this a bit and came to a decision.

I am a techy at heart and have included an impressive amount of tech in our preps.

I have just taken the time to assure the survival of that tech. Ammo cans and static bags have great use in this.

Properly applied tech is an invaluable tool that cannot be ignored.

Just my thoughts.

I save stuff on the fly to flash, then burn copies. I use DVD's, SD's and flash. My laptop/desktop has DVD/CD player, usb and card reader. Tablet and phone has sd/micro. Don't write too many times to your flash, it'll degrade faster. Most important I think is making sure you'll have the playback device available for whatever media you use. I like redundancy.

I shall begin to do that!

If the grid goes down and or a EMP hits, I will use the laptop as my Encyclopedia Britannia and entertainment

And no worry about viruses on it either.
