There are Israeli K98's in .308, most you find are beat to hell and back, but still a damn fine battle rifle, in a more accessible caliber than 8mm.

Thats humbling

Well whats your fancy? The most important thing is that whatever you put on it, it needs to be secured with quality parts. Meaning base and rings. Now that its secured properly and to spec(you'll be using a torque wrench with in/lb settings), the scope needs to be reliable and accurate. .1 mil better be .1 mil. It needs to be able to be adjusted and return with flawless precision ideally with external target style turrets. 10 mils up 10 mils down and be right back at zero. Then if you still have money it needs to have a matching and correct reticle. Mil/Mil or MOA/MOA (Turrets/Reticle). Then if you still have money it needs good glass and if it is adjustable power it needs to be "First Focal Plane"(FFP) and if you STILL have money you can add illuminated reticle(personally not a fan) or nicer turret style paralax adjustment etc. Your best bang for the buck is a fixed power with no extra bells or whistles. You get the most quality for your dollar.

Feel free to message me if you have any questions or want to chat further.

I knew you were the guy to talk to about this!  I'm treading unfamiliar ground here so i'm going carefully. Where I currently live I don't have much long range shooting options, but I'm planning on changing that.
My current goal was to push the rifle to it's max with some quality ammo and a standard scope. As of now I've not exceeded 500m :'(
From that Id figure I'd shop for some glass but I did not take into account the mounts and I was under the impression they were all the same.  (I know)
I read an article on FFP reticules and like the concept of how It would allow me to keep my eye on the target (please fill in anything I'm leaving out) I am considering an illuminated scope being that a set of pvs 14s' will be integrated into my set up eventually.

All sounds about right. Yes the rings and base or rail, makes the optic. The best scope in the world could be totally worthless on cheap mounts.  The purpose of FFP is to keep the unit of measure on the reticle (I.e. the lines or dots in Mil or MOA) the same no matter what power you are on. A Second Focalplaine scope has a reticle thats unit of measure is only correct on one power setting, typically the highest power on the scope. The reason you want it to be correct on all settings is so you can make adjustments as in holding 2 Mil left for wind(you never dope wind with the turrets as it always changes from shot to shot, second to second) or a quick 1 Mil over adjustment up after a miss. Or to calculate distance. Theres formulas to do so using the reticle if you know the size of something in the scope like a curb or the height of a man etc. This requires FFP to do on any power.

But like I said, a fixed Power scope does away with the FFP/SFP Stuff all together. The reason youd be best to avoid this is that you pay extra to get scopes with FFP. Thats money that could have went to the quality of the glass in a fixed power. Fixed power isnt for all people and applications. Its just something to consider. Take Two scopes. Both $1000. One is fixed power and one is 3-9 FFP. The fixed power will very likely Have better glass or something because they didnt have to put money into moving parts and FFP etc. The general rule of thumb, assuming good eyesight in the shooter, is 1 power per 100 yards. So if the max you shoot is 500m you might be able to squeak by with a fixed 4 power. But if you need to shoot in close then 1-4 power in FFP isnt bad either.

Good find Crudo's!
i've got a Keltec SU16c on my shopping list that scope will go on beautifully.

Sadly it's reticle is designed for the 5.56 round and will be largely ineffective for the .308 on my FAL. :(
