Facebook As The Ultimate Government Surveillance Tool?

Earlier this month it came out that among Facebook’s myriad algorithmically induced advertising categories was an entry for users whom the platform’s data mining systems believed might be interested in treason against their government. The label had been applied to more than 65,000 Russian citizens, placing them at grave risk should their government discover the label. Similarly, the platform’s algorithms silently observe its two billion users’ actions and words, estimating which users it believes may be homosexual and quietly placing a label on their account recording that estimate. What happens when governments begin using these labels to surveil, harass, detain and even execute their citizens based on the labels produced by an American company’s black box algorithms?
. . .
Go read the rest and be a bit concerned. Maybe give up FB yourself.

but i can build a fire in the rain without a lighter.

I'm not active on social media either. I guess I'm too paranoid...oh well.

I am on facebook. I believe fundamentally networking is more important that OPSEC.
By a big margin.
If we allow the lefts pressure to take over the public domain than we have already lost.
if we all stand up w/o fear on social media for what is right we make it impossible for the left to sell their toxic stew as "the people's beliefs".

Agreed Erick!

Erick you are right, i'm just too old fashioned i guess.

I have tried Facebook twice and deleted my account both times. The first time when I discovered that anyone could post on my page without me knowing, and the second time just because I don't want it.
My wife has and enjoys it.
For me it is not an issue of opsec just what I choose.

I have an account so I can see my children and grandchildren. I also have it so I can post the truth and important items that never make the MSM.

I use it to stay connected with family and friends.
Big help staying connected to buddies from my Army days.
It is like any tool. Used properly it can be useful. You need to set you security settings to the level you feel comfortable with.
