End of the world guns...

I'm talking firearms that will NEVER let you down no matter what.  Simplicity and function.  I'm talking 3 years into WROL when all the batteries for your red-dots, flashlights, tacticool shit, and etc. are no more.  The following are my prepping buddies' lists and my own.

1)  Nyman:  S&W K and J Frame, bolt-action .308, bolt-action .22, Remington 870 12-guage pump.
2)  Foltz:  8mm Mauser bolt-action, Ruger p90 .45ACP, lever-action .357 magnum/.38 special, Ruger 10/22, WASR-10.
3)  Foltz' sister:  Ruger P97 .45ACP, 20-guage pump, .22 bolt-action.
4)  Me:  Winchester 12-guage pump, .22 savage bolt-action, WASR-10, Mosin-Nagant, Sig-p220, S & W j-frame.

I think those are pretty good lists.  Other than the P90.  But that's just my personal experience with that one.

What about 10 years into WROL?  I kind of like JohnyMac's black powder idea's on that one.  That or a cross bow.

Mine would probably be :  1) Remington 760 pump,3006   2)Mossberg 12 gauge Ultimag   3) SKS (since I don't have an AR or AK)   4) Sig Sauer P226 E2 40 cal.

LOL!  It took me a minute to figure out that was an AR thing due to there not being any on the first list.  The list was based on simplicity from what I read.  An AR can last for a long time.  Anyone who wants one of those jump on it.

I think that depending on circumstances of what caused the "end of the world" that most of the failures, be they round count, barrel related or otherwise, will take place in the first two years.  Then naturally decrease as nature takes it's course as long as the weapon is maintained.

If true, that would mean that the fastest decrease in your stored ammo, or found ammo, would take place during that early period.  You should then be able to calculate with a little better degree of accuracy how long your remaining ammo would last.

Aimpoint's are impressive.  If I found one laying around I'd pick it up and see if it still works.  But it's not where I myself would be investing my money initially.  I know there are others who feel differently.

Black powder kept people safe, or not, for several hundred years.  In a world where modern weapons have vastly decreased for whatever reason.  It would seem to make sense to learn about it and how to make it.  I would think it would be possible to figure out.  Although, yes, you probably would want to test that theory beforehand.

Bows and crossbows are great and useful as silent hunters. When you don't want to call attention to where you are located.   This is true also for air rifles for smaller game.

Let me educate all of you "assumers" of the point of this thread, since I am the one who started it.  Absolutely NOTHING to do with AR/AK pro or anti.  You know what happens when assumptions take place.  Why don't you ask the author?  You didn't.  Anyway, to address an earlier reply, battery-dependent and laden devices will ALWAYS FAIL sooner than you think; lithium or otherwise - doesn't matter (Murphy's Law).  I agree tritium won't; unless you buy a "new in box" that has been on the shelf for 4 or more years.  My Sig p220R has tritiums standard, just love 'em.  They are so good I decided not to mount a laser or flashlight on the standard rail.  BTW - the out-of-the-box accuracy and my mad skills make for a scary combination.  I think I will enter some of the local "stock" shoots and see what prizes I can rack up this summer.  Almost feels like I am cheating with that gun...

The exact same I'm rockin now. Currently 2 colt 6920's, 2 beretta 92fs, and a glock 17 and a marlin 881. I have no reason whatsoever to think that in 3 years of little more than existing these will not perform. Even post WROL scenario. I dont see getting into alot of gunfight. So for the most part they will just be with me. As far as parts breakage. Not a concern, I have enough, key spart parts to keep them all running well beyond when the ammo supply runs out.

I have an Irons only AR if it comes to that, but I have several years worth of batteries for the EO Tech.  I have several Glocks - and they will outlast most guns.  I have plenty of spare parts for everything.  I have an 870 or two if all else fails.  And if I have needed to shoot so much that I break all that then I'll either be dead or there will be plenty of weapons around me.

I don't envision a 3 year bout of no civilization though- civilization and technology will return as long as people can read.  I just hope I'm part of a society that can make AA batteries

one of the only weapons i would need is a browning sa 22, they require little oil for cleaning and are reliable, they break down in two pieces easily so u can have it hidden in a back pack while traveling, and yes id choose that over a ak or high power rifle simply because i feel there will be more small game since every idiot and his brother will be deer huntin

A few things:

1) You have to have spare parts or redundancy in firearms just like your flour mill. One is none- Two is one.
2) You can't spend all of your ammo $$$ on ammo. Spend it on reloading supplies too. Not only for your existing SHTF weapons but
    for other common firearms, e.g. 30-30, .270, .300 Sav., 30/06, etc. Don't forget to include molds for when your jacketed bullets
    run out. There will be a shit-ton of wheel weights post SHTF to melt down
3) You need to have silent simple weapon like a bow (I like compound bows as long as you have the correct arrows) and cross
     bow.
4) Last, yupper black powder and the rifles and pistols that take a round ball and patch. One pound of BP = 7,000 grains. If you
    shoot a 80 gr load (That is what I use in most of my BP rifles) that would give you 85-87 shots per pound. Now a buddy of
    mine uses 55 grains per load that's 125-130 shots per pound. A 55 grain load will put deer sized and thin skinned game down.

    Using my .54 caliber flint lock I can obtain over 1,600 fps at 50 yards using a patched round ball weighing 225 grains. That's
    1,250 - 1,300 pounds of bullet energy at 50 yards and about half that at 100 yards. Round balls have been known to kill people
    out past 200 yards as General Johny Burgoyne found out at the Battle of Saratoga.

    Black powder can be used as a bullet propellant in many weapons too. Remember BP cartridges are still being used today. BP
    is more friendly to brass cases too. Just remember if you load a cartridge using BP like lets say a 30-30, use enough powder so
    when seating the jacketed bullet the powder is compressed. BP tends to become an explosive Vs. a propellant if there is to
    much space between the grains. If you are using a molded lead bullet a hard BP grease/lube like bees wax will help to keep
    fouling to a minimum. Also I would recommend using a "gas check" on the base of your molded bullet.

Welcome back li'brother, I hate to correct you but every idiot and his brother will also be hunting small game. When people get hungry they don't just see deer they see rabbits, house cats and neighborhood dogs as a sourse of protein.

To the point I have stocked up on small rodent traps from house mouse up to skunk/raccoon sized traps, I've got spools of snare wire and sacks of grain to bait it with.

also where i live snakes are every where , would u say shoot them with a 22 or save the ammo and try to kill them with a shovel?

I would save my ammo anytime I could.

I was talking with PapaBear and he suggests using a live trap to catch mice and then putting them into a trap that is much like a crawdad trap for catching snakes.

I was just out doing a small mammal survey at work and I can vouch for the idea. We had rattle snakes prowling around the traps that had rodents in them.

I thought it was a fantastic idea because you were taking a nuisance (house mice) and turning it into bait for snakes. A mouse won't feed anyone but a fat timber rattler... that's good eating!
