Educate Me
« on: March 06, 2012, 01:12:09 AM »
Ok boys, sorry I haven't been very active lately but I finally have some time on my hands. Anyway down the road I'll be going over to the dark side and switching to an AR as my primary. I don't know much about the platform and I'll likely build my own. So any links, articles, brands to stay away from or advice will be greatly appreciated. Thank's in advance.

Just a warning, if this thread turns into a shit storm I will remove it.

Feel free to discuss the finer points of building an AR but keep it clean.

Honestly, put your money in something you KNOW you will want.
Don't be afraid to spend a little extra to get something you know you will both want to keep AND be able to trust 100%.

My AR was just "eh". It never malfunctioned and was accurate but i just didn't trust it. Eventually the lack of chrome lining started to bother me, as did AR mag design and choices, but whatever, nothing against the AR.

My MAK-90 is 150% pure rock and fucking roll all day every day and it just happens to be my favorite MBR. Fucking love it, can't get over it.

I traded my AR for a bolt gun recently.

Crookedsights,

First, what is your current primary and why do you not like it? Next what are your thoughts in wanting an AR?

I think the team would be able to better guid you if you could fill in some of the blanks.

Thanks and welcome back.

Currently my primary is a WASR-10 and I have no problems with it all, it gets the job done every time all the time. There are a few reasons I wanna go the AR route, mainly for commonality because by brothers got his heart set on an AR. Also I figure I can kill two birds with one stone by using it as a DMR and a MBR. The final nail in the coffin for me switching is the .22 conversions.

The best way I have seen to get into a quality, dependable affordable AR is to go through Spikes Tactical or Bravo Company. Bravo has been doing things right for a long time and many well known tactical moguls swear by them. Check out.

I always thought a trigger was just a trigger, you breath squeeze and round down range.

I will never have that thought again.

This is what I'm running and probably the only trigger I will ever run in an AR again.

colt sp1 never had any problems out of it.the old car 15's were good too. just buy a good brand and you will be good, the century ar's are build on colt parts with their lower and barrel.

Personally, I'd say look into Sigs, Colt, Noveske, and S&W's before you decide to go out building your own. If you do I'd go with Delton. The beautiful thing about the AR platform aside from the accuracy is the ability to customize the hell out of it. Make it personal and have fun with it. Make sure if you buy one already built it's chambered for 5.56; not .223. 1:7 ratio is probably best for a 16" barrel. You can go 1:9 too, but this is my personal preference and no need to kick that dead horse with a 3 page thread again. Also, if you decide to splurge, like Reaver said, get a good trigger. I'd add to that check here http://failzero.com/armory/ar-15.html Also, mil-spec buffer tube assembly. May want to customize your charging handle too. Some people prefer them a little larger. Oh, and if you see some one advertising as RARGUNS or Triggers Inc. Run, run like the freaking wind.  :))

P.S. Sig, best of both worlds my friend.  ;)

I'm confused BWB. Does the "." mean you're on your period and can't talk and will be back in 7 days?  ???

bcm, lmt, rra, noveske, spikes tactical, daniel defense all make the top notch shit

i have no expirience with S&W so i cant really speak on their ar's

but i'd steer clear of the sig ar15's, they make a good pistol  but their ar's are lacking when compared to the brands i listed

I would also recommend to the OP that you get yourself involved in reloading as you have stated that you need your AR to become a DMR in conjunction with MBR. If this is the case, you really need to get used to firing some heavier grain bullets for long distance engagements, and the best way to afford that is to reload. And in the long term, it would be better to get another dedicated upper with its own optic, which would make it easier to transition from MBR to DMR. Just some food for thought.

??? Yeah, I guess I should have been more specific when I said "Sig." I'm thinking more along the lines of my 556, or a Sig 551, Swat, etc. Though I've not heard many complaints along the lines of the 516 short stroke. I will say though, I like the barrel in my AR better than that of my Sigs. Just not in a position to want to change it out anytime soon.
