Do I realy need a 12 gauge?
« on: September 01, 2011, 02:12:49 PM »
I have a 20 gauge singel shot and am not sure if I could handel a 12 gauge pump. Would a 20 gauge massberg 500 be good enough for home defence?

my shotgun is the last thing i would use for HD...i use my m4..i dont want a round or ball bearing going threw the wall and hitting my kid.....that being said if you want a shotgun. i prefer 12 gauge. they have alot more meat to them. its alot  more power, but i take that as a good thing [url=http://www.freesmileys.or ....GO MERICA !!!!!

IMO the gauge of the shell is much less important than mag capacity. that single shot BS aint gonna cut it. I'd much rather have a 20g. with a tube magazine than a 10g single shot.

there's no such thing as a "single shot pump". the pump on a shotgun is just a mechanism for ejecting the spent shell and pulling the next one from the magazine. someone please correct me if I'm wrong here, because this thread is throwing me off a little.

ughh... you're right, I read it wrong from the beginning.

well, to answer your question, given your height and weight, you should be able to handle 12g just fine. I'm 5'10" 170 and I'll rock 00Buck all day. and given the choice between the two, I'd definitely choose 12. just my .02

I was shooting a 12 gauge at 6 years old. Nut the fuck up and deal with it. A 12 Gauge is A mandatory must have for a WROL inventory.

I would say that you NEED a 12 gauge. It doesn't have to be fancy or anything, but it is the most common shotgun, meaning it will have the most ammo available for it. Plus the power and devastation of a 12g is undeniable. I personally choose the remington 870's. Other shotguns work well too, but I prefer the 870.

I haven't bought 20 gauge ammo in a long time so I could be mistaken, but I believe 12 gauge ammo is cheaper and more readily available and everyone and there brother has one. 12 has a larger variety of ammo choices and after market accessories and I don't think I've ever seen any less lethal 20 gauge loads. I'm 6ft, 165lbs and have no problem with the recoil.

Damn, I wish I was as tough as some of you guys.  I've got an aluminum 12 ga.  pump and I keep a lazy boy recliner strapped to the end of the stock in a lame effort to tame it down.  After about 12 rounds of 8 pellet I'm ready to switch to a pellet gun and send them down range one pellet at a time.

hah, yea man the jury has spoken. just a word of advice: don't get caught up in make and model... IMO anything with a reputation will serve you just fine.

and (i almost hate to do this) if you're working on a really cheap budget. New England Firearms Pardner Pump.... i had one for a while until I got my 870. under $200 for an identical Rem870 knockoff/clone. to tell you the truth, I had more trouble breaking in my 870 than i had with that little pardner pump.

i don't know where the hell that guy found one for that cheap. the cheapest one I could find was $299 and it was a youth model.

most of the standard ones seem to run between $350-$450
