How much ammo is too much?
« on: December 27, 2011, 11:22:56 AM »
At what amount of ammo stores for your primary weapon would you then make an effort not to buy any more?  Remember, this is for a single weapon, not an entire compound of preppers.

Since the sky is the limit, the voting options are limited.

Post your limit if it above 20,000 rounds OR unlimited.

I voted 5000, that's over 13 full ammo heavy loadouts. if I have that much trouble I've got to move or stop being an asshole.
Now .22s are a different story, if I dip below 10k I start getting worried.

The only time you have to much ammo is when your floor can't support the weight of all the ammo.
Then you just move some of it in the basement.

Hell if I could I could shoot all day. All night into the next day until the sleep monster took over. Then after a quick 20 minute power nap. It's game on again.

If I could I would.

Everything in life is a balance.

Do I put away 2,000 more rounds of ammo for my BR or do I buy food for storage? Do I buy another years worth of food or do I put away needed medicine for my diabetic wife? Do I buy more and more precious metals or do I put away 2,000 more rounds of ammo....

All things in life need balance.

Please keep my mini rant some thought.  :))

We are in agreement here.

.22's are cheap and their usefulness after tshtf cannot be overstated.

too much ammo like JM said is depending on your situation... if its in balance with all other areas of preperation then its fine no matter the amount.

Now my brother is a .22LR hoarder. He vacuum seals those 550 bulk packs. At camp it seems like he has 20-25 box's- No telling how many he has at home.

I say as much as you can spare since some people are going to head your way eventually and the may or may not have anything to add to the mix.

I buy a lot of ammo.  The good thing is that ammo is easy to sell.  After christmas I sold 4,500 rds of 7.62x39 in one week.  made a good profit on it too.

I'd say no more than 5,000 in your house at one time. Now that doesn't mean I wouldn't have some stashed elsewhere. In that case 10,000.

Why the 5000 limit in the house at one time White Wolf?  Just curious why you settled at that number.  Is that total or for each caliber?  You could reach that number with 8 boxes of 22lr.

It's all situational my friend. 5,000 rounds is a lot to lugaaround with you if you need to bug out as is. Let alone 10,000+
Also I look at as a fire hazard. I'd hate to think if my house caught on fire that one side of the house could be a ticking time bomb . Plus, if you're going to buy that much to me it would make sense to set it up in secondary location should you need to leave. Like the old sang goes "Don't put all your eggs in the same basket."

I always think of the weight when talking about how much ammo, because you could have 50,000 rounds, but if you have to get up and go within 5 minutes, how much of that can you actually carry?

Why do any of you think in terms of how much ammo you can carry?

Have you paid attention to nothing?  Do you not know about caches?

Why would you have all your ammo in one place if you have more than you can carry on you?

I believe a while ago I posted the Special Forces Manual on Caches.  You should definitely check it out.

If you've got 50 or 20 thousand rounds, by all means, please cache some of it, in strategic places that will be most advantageous to you.

I'd love to have 50 thousand rounds, but by all means, I would never keep them all in my house.  Thus, 50,000 rounds is plenty enough as long as you've prepped in all the other areas just as much.  You just need to cache some of it.  With ammo, its really, never is enough, as long as you've prepped sufficiently in all other areas as well.

Yeah, it helps to read peoples post. I think I addressed this already, but hey whatever. You did a great job reiterating for me.
