Body Armor Comments
« on: September 09, 2015, 11:37:46 AM »
Hi all,

Benn pretty busy here on our preps.

So sorry I have not posted in a while.

Today I wanted to cover the topic of Body Armor.

As I have said in another post. I have found a Military Surplus Wholesaler here in the UK that has some really great stuff.

www.gisurplus.co.uk

One of the deals they had that I jumped on was for UK Police Body Armor.

Now these as far as I can determine are rated to IIIa level.

Although there is one significant difference. Being that these have a significant level of stab protection built into them.

I have taken the time to do some reviews of this on youtube reviews.

The normal IIIa stuff without the stab protection is not to effective against bows and crossbows. Yet the ones I got here for £18.50 each are stupendous. I have watched many live tests where they stop 200 lb crossbow hits with field points and Broad heads at 20ft.

The reason I bring this up?

You have to be able to protect yourself from low tech dangers as well as modern firearms.

Due to the threat level here in the UK (sans firearms to a point) I have traded weight and mobility against protection level. Yes we could go hard plate. Yet I would rather trade the weight in armor for ability to carry other supplies.

Just a thought.

See what you can find out about shipping that to the US.  Zip code 31794 if necessary.  Figuring $30 purchase price . . ..

Great tip gadget!

On the subject of body armor...IMO, stay away from the steel plates and save up a bit more for ceramic plates. Lugging around 6# is a lot easier than 16# (front & back weight).

There are a bunch of options for plates that are becoming available that are a ton lighter than steel. Like Optics and Comms look for the best deal that you can get....but it is worth saving up to get a good set...dont skimp on body armor.

Gadget those are some great deals on soft armor with stab protection. Some of those look to be able to hard plates as well.

Yep they have some ex-german police ceramic plate vests in stock.

I suggest that a bunch of you get together and work up a group buy. They have a minimum order of £150 and you have to buy in lots as stated on the site. I am more than sure that they will ship to the US for a good order.

We have bought a large amount of the different things that they have on offer And have never been disappointed with the quality.

I could go on and on about different items they have and never do justice to them.

Take a look at the Swiss Mountain Troop Camo Suit. There is more to the top than meets the eye. It is built with pockets in it to replace load bearing equipment and come with a detachable backpack.

Hell .... where are you going to get moisture wicking Coolmax T-shirts for £0.95 each? Yes you have to buy 30 at a time thought it is worth it.

The First Aid kits that you have to buy 5 at a time at £7.50 each are unbelievable. We bought five of them to see what they were like. They were more than complete. To include Codine pills and Nerve agent antidote Syretes. We tossed the drugs but the kits are really comprehensive.

Thanks all.

Hey Gadget,
I am looking for a camo design for the folks here at the cabin. US military camo is a bit pricey so I was thinking about a surplus EU design. If you run across a site that has several different former designs and has more than small sizes, please pass my way.

Mentioning it here as other folks maybe interested too.
Thx

Nemo,

All I can say is OUCH. I was looking up quotes on postage alone and we are looking at $50.00 at least.

Just did a quick search on Ebay USA and there are bunches of Alpenflage on there. Would be cheaper that way.

Thanks for linking those videos brat.  I've always been a bit skeptical about it bit it seems to be relatively effective. Even with the Ninjutsu "invisibility" training where you're taught to utilize and identify camouflaged targets and knowing that I was looking for him in a small frame it took me a few moments to spot him in a few of those scenes. I reckon it would be quite difficult to spot if you're just passing by. His environment was also rather close to what we have here for most of the year.

Hope this link helps ken If it doesn't hyperlink just copy into your search bar.

I have quite a bit of saving up to do. A relatively inexpensive set of ceramic plates down here costs around R7500.

Seems like a bargain at $350ish for a 3.3lb plate.
