How long does it take for a back ground check and is it different in each state? I now live in Delaware and haven'tbought a gun here yet. My pistol and rifle are regestered in NJ.

Waiting period in Iowa to obtain a permit to aquire a handgun is 3 days. After that, no waiting period. If you have a concealed carry license there is no waiting period. No waiting period on any long guns.
-
JoJo it is different in each state. DMC just gave you Iowa, while here in RI it is a 7day wait to purchase unless you have a CCW then it is just the NICS check. Unlike NJ (or Mass, CT, NY) there is no such registration here.
-
CJS is 100% correct for RI.
In that 7 day wait if you do not have a CCW, the selling FFL dealer sends a copy of your purchase to his/her towns Police Chief. The thought is that the there might be pending restriction that the NICS may not have been updated on, e.g. domestic abuse, restraining order, etc.
In PA. it is immediate post the NICS check when purchased through a FFL dealer for long and/or short guns.
Each state is different.

NCIS phone check when purchasing in Ga. If clean, take it with you when you pay for it and leave. If you have CCW permit, no phone call needed. No background check done. Pay for your weapon and leave.

Thanks, good to see Lil Rhody is well represented here. I know Johny Mac is out at the redoubt most of the time now but I still consider him a Rhode Islander as well.

Is Rhode Island big enough for 2 or 3 of you at once. You know, the egos and such? Just wondering.
