reloaded .223 price estimate
« on: March 09, 2012, 09:31:03 PM »
(this may need to be in off-topic or maybe another reloading thread if there is an official one. mods, feel free to move if necessary)

I'm about to go and buy a sizable amount of components to reload all my .223 brass (I've already re-sized, de-primed, and trimmed about 3K cases)

can anyone give me a rough estimate of what I'll be spending on primers, powder, and bullets for about 3K rds of .223? I've already got about 1-1/2 lbs. of powder but don't count that because I'm still interested in knowing the full dollar value of about 3K rds worth of components. also, how will my price vary between bullet to bullet? (as in, ball/steel core/hollow/nylon tip... etc.) I'd like to load a few different varieties for different situations. hollows or nylon tips for soft targets, steel core like m855 for hard targets, and ball for cost-effectiveness.

any and all responses are welcome. thanks guys.

from wideners.com  CCI 41 small rifle primers $25/1000, .224 55gr fmjbt $78/1000,  h335 $20/1pound.  there is 7000 grains in one pound.  lets say you are using a 25 grain powder charge for each cartridge. for 1k you will need at least 4 pounds of powder $80.  $203 for 1k.  you can cut that down by buying the powder in a 8 pound keg $128/8pounds $16/pound.  $64/1k rounds which would put the total at $189/1k rounds

1000 rounds for 189 bucks sounds like a good deal to me.  [URL=http://www.smileyvault.co

www.patsreloading.com has 3000rds of pulldown 62gr greentip for $250.

They also sell 9lbs cans of pulldown powder for $85-$90 each.

The problem is the USPS thinks powder and primers are dangerious so shipping cost and arm and a leg.

Wideners will send you primers and powder all under one hazmat fee ($25-) for one order.

If you can, try and find a place that sells powder, nearby, say within a 45 minute drive or so.  That will take care of the hazmat fee.  That's what GAP does.  Plus you usually meet some awesome people at these places.  The one he goes to is IraqVeteran's store, and its good to meet with other preppers and gun people.

I know gas is expensive, but to really save money on reloading you have to load up, so save up a bunch of money and buy in bulk.  Maybe even by everything else at the store while you are there as they have it.  Help keep places like that in business.

I understand if you can't find somewhere that sells reloading supplies, but most of the time, you have look really hard to find it, because they don't really advertise it usually.  So yeah, look hard and find a local place to save money on the hazmat fee.

well there's a gunshop only about 10 minutes from me that sells powder and some miscellaneous reloading accessories but not bullets or primers... ??? strange i know... lol. but anyway, there's a Cabela's about 45 minutes away. I freakin love that place but their prices are a bit painful. but yea, i got it covered. I don't really buy too much stuff online anyway. i know the interwebs is the best place to find deals but i don't use plastic so I always have to get someone else to swipe their plastic and let me pay them back. so it makes it a bit more difficult.

EJR brings up a good point.

I use IMR 3031 for a slew of rifle cartridges; from .223 to .308Win. I buy it in 8# jugs. The last time I bought it a Cabelas (By the way they had to order the 8# jug as they didn't carry it in the store) it was around $179- and with a $20- coupon I got it for $159-. Now it was a 240 mile round trip (16 miles to the gallon so 16 ? 240 miles x $3.50 a gallon = $52.50 PLUS lunch $20- Plus a flippen jacket my wife wanted $79- (She insisted on tagging along).

I ordered some from Mid-way about 4 months ago and it was $152.00 plus $25- for the hazmat fee and $15.99 for the shipping = $202-

I haven't ordered any from Widiners yet but there price is $135- plus the $25 for hazmat and shipping so that will be, $175.00 or so. Now as mentioned eralier, if you order a whole bunch of hazmat stuff on one order, they told me they would only charge one hazmat fee.

My next plan of action is to see if someone locally (Ma. will not sell to non-residents) in RI who can order IMR 30-31 powder for me. Even if the price is in the $150-$160 range, I will make out OK.

I get most of my reloading stuff from moss gun and pawn (where Iraqvetran works). When I first started reloading he took like an hour on a busy Saturday afternoon to help me get the right stuff. I would rather pay alittle more and support my semi local economy than order off the net. When I go I try to buy enough to make it about the same price when you figure in the hazmat fee. I'm not a big fan of ordering anything I can find local off the net because it is trackable. But buy in bulk and save money, I picked up 1000 new 55gr. fmjs  for $90 and 1000 pieces of once fired brass for $45 at a local gun show a few months back so dont rule out gun show finds. I use cci # 41 primers in my .223 loads. I really push for using local shops but then again I'm a small business owner so I understand more than most about using the little guy. Just my .02.

I'm all about it for all the same reasons, i just wish I had more options available to me. there's still one shop that I haven't been to in at least a couple years that I still need to check with for bullets. wish me luck.
