I do need to get one of those things.   I have not looked at ebay but the prices this talks about seems too good to pass up.

But some related thoughts gents.  DM, not at all intended to throw rocks at you.  Unless you are part of the govt agency making lists.  Then they are intended to be big rocks, accurately thrown.

Click on this one gents.  It will take you the same place but keep DM and you from being tied together and linked into that email address and ad program.

I get those also.  If I share I end the link at the first ? and that is generally the key.

I do not know what all it shares but if you read the address it has much more info in it than it takes to get you to that at.  And with current email marketing one never knows.  It could be getting you on a government list.

Or do I just need a better hat.  I made sure I got heavy duty and put the shiny side out.

If you need a second magazine, its time to call in air support.

God created Man, Col. Sam Colt made him equal, John Moses Browning turned equality to perfection, Gaston Glock turned perfection into plastic fantastic junk.

I already have Dosimeters in our prep's

Lord do I want to get a Geiger counter or two.

I am still playing with the Android App where you put black tape over you camera lens on your phone though. I need to get a test source to see if it is doing what is advertised though.

trigger warning :)  :trolling:
I've always been amused by geiger counters.
doing a radiac survey you could find yourself in a position of knowing just how screwed you are.  And there being very little you can do about it.
-
if you live down wind of a nuclear power plant, are worried about a radiac leak or fallout - a counter will tell you how bad it is.  but by then it is probably better to wait out the short halflife elements before moving.  Keep in mind that in a power plant accident much of the initially released isotopes will be gaseous.
-
what do you do with the information?  it doesn't tell you what elements or isotopes.  Only that there is ionizing radiation about.
-
'Prussian blue' is not a commonly used phrase and few people would know how to use it.
KI is better known but only helps against a commonly released element in a power plant accident.
-
i know a person -  :tinfoil: type - who got himself convinced that his doctor was trying to poison him.  His geiger counter showed that his 'no-salt' (recommended for a health condition) was radio-active.  I jokingly suggested he check his bananas.  I had to spend the next hour talking him down.
-
i think it is a very good idea to be aware of a threat - i own a 'cheap' counter and check it about once a year using a can of potasium chloride (salt substitute) from my kitchen.  I even own KIO just in case of a power plant accident - possible in my area.  but i'm not sure how high up the list of BBB,BB it should be.  I have them because i'm a 'Its better to light a single candle than curse at the dark' kind of person.  I even have a diode type dosimeter - purchased years later.  but, do you have a plan to survey the area daily?  if not, how often?  What will you do with that information?  I'm waiting for someone who lives in Denver to freak out because the normal background radiation is very high (altitude and granite mountains).  or someone in South Africa to test it in a cave and find out the alpha count is dangerously high (radon and uranium salts).
-
if the intent is to use them in a SHTF because normal monitoring has stopped, you need to know what they are telling you and how to use them.  otherwise you might be left with alot of information and a lack on knowledge.  its a dangerous combination.
-
if you live down wind of a water type N.power plant (US, European, Japanese) and the grid dropped, best to not be there when the safety valves release (hours to days depending).  if you live down wind of a carbon-pile type plant (typically Russian make - minutes to hours) just run.
-
i think an apt analogy - the most dangerous person with a weapon is someone who doesn't know how to and hasn't the will to use it.  the same applies to radiac meters.
-
rant over.

Thank you Nemo an Kbop for this discussion.

Kbop .... you make some very good points.

During my time in I was sent to the NBC course.

You are very correct in that there is a need to be able to understand what any monitoring equipment is telling you and how to use that info.

While I am mildly clued in. The avereage prepper may not be.

I have the dosimeter's and the Android app mainly due to the fact that I found them at a cheap price and they would make an intelligent addition to our preps at the price.

While I have a family that is all for our prepper hobby, I still struggle to get a teenager to sit down and be trained in the knowledge I have on subjects such as NBC defense. If I ever find the golden bb on that one I will share.

Back to the subject at hand, I fully recommend that any prepper should grab online the Military manuals on NBC.

The added knowledge can demistify the subject and bring comfort that things can be managed if required. I would point out that this knowledge is quite applicable to things like local industrial accidents. So well worth a small bit of study.

Thanks

Rob
