Jet engines don't have pistons, neither should ARs.

I saw a gas system a while back in a gun magazine that was neither piston or D.I., it used some sort of linkage to unlock the bolt.  Does anyone here know what this system is called?  Was it a flop, because I've heard nothing about it in years.
