A real first aid/medical kit
« on: February 05, 2014, 09:27:23 AM »
You can bet the wealthy and well connected people have serious medical and first aid kits.
Those kits have everything from morphine to surgical istruments.
Are there any sources for information and requirements for these super kits ?

USNERDOC, on YouTube, seems to have a lot of good videos on SHTF medical kits and similar topics.

Also, I was just looking at these two items when I saw your post.

Two new and innovative products.

The iTClamp, and the XStat.

Welcome aboard Stymie222, don't forget to post your presentation in the introductions section.

The idea is to know how to use what you have in your kits, you can learn some basic procedures studying first aid or doing a paramedic certification.

You can read a survival medicine book I posted in my blog some time ago http://apx808.blogspot.com.ar/2011/05/survival-and-austere-medicine-ebook.html

Or reading PHTLS: Prehospital Trauma Life Support or "Medicine for the Outdoors" by Auerbach or "Where there is no doctor" that is free.

In there you'll understand some procedures and get ideas for items in the big medicine kits.

But in the end the only way to really understand, what should contain  and know how to use one of those big kits is going to med school or getting a real doctor in your group.

Hope it helps.

Many moons ago when I delivered boats I use to have a first-aide kit in a Pelican case. Sorry it is long gone however how it came about through a doctor who was a fellow sailor.

He made recommendations of what I should have in hardware and then he wrote me scrips so I could add to the kit. In the kit was a paperback book that you used to look up a patients symptoms and then a recommendation on how to treat the symptom. I used that kit for infections on feet, barbed hooks in palms, vomiting, diarrhea, and other basic maladies. Never found anything for hangovers though. DO NOT MIX MI TAI'S AND BEER!

This little story really doesn't help you Stymie22 other than to suggest you ask your family GP (If you have one) for suggestions and help.

We are lucky in that my sister in-law is a RN. Between her connections and my family's GP we have been working jointly in putting away the attached Excel spreadsheet. We haven't revisited this list to see where we are in about a year. Dental needs some serious work though.

Stymie22, I hope the spreadsheet helps you out a bit.

To forum members: This spreadsheet should only be used for reference purposes ONLY. I will not accept any responsibility if you hurt yourself or another by using this list!

There are lots of places that will sell pre-put-together combat quality packs for you....

http://www.chinookmed.com/

Pricey, but if your looking to spend the dosh, then they seem like a decent, vet-owned company.

Another place for kits is Wilderness Medical http://www.wildernessmedical.com/
Comprehensive kits depending on what you are doing and how much you want to carry. I carry the grasshopper when hunting with a backpack and the Humbug II is for the vehicle. You will have to talk to your doctor about meds that you want to carry (couple of antibiotics, intestinal parasite meds, pain management, epi pen, etc) depending on where you are traveling. One thing to add is a dental kit and dental wax.
Other than that, I second the earlier comment about getting some medical training. A lot of damage can be done by the untrained trying to open an airway or using a tournaquet.

Or you can keep researching the contents of various kits and build you own with items that you/your group are comfortable using. Simple and quick to use is always best.

rah45 - those are very nice items, thanks for sharing.
