Erick, I had a Curio & Relics FFL for many years. Basically you can buy firearms that are 50 years or older using your C&R Federal Firearms License. You can only sell so many C&R purchased weapons a year because you are a "collector" and what you do sell should be sold through a dealer unless you sell to a FFL holder.

You have to keep track of your transactions like with any FFL. I gave my license up because the last time I received a notice to renew my license it came with a letter reminding me that I give up all fourth Amendment rights for the BATF&E to come into my home to review my transactions and the weapons I own without a search warrant.

Good reason to have it is if you are a collector like I am (I am always looking for Savage Model 99's) and don't want to have to go through the hassle and expense of going through a licensed dealer. It is also good to have in that there is no waiting period or quantity restrictions. So if you want to buy a case of Mosin Naget rifles in Maryland - Have at it. It is also beneficial in acquiring non-resident CCW's in "those" states  I have never been turned down when I have applied. I guess "they" figure that if you have a FFL you can be trusted to carry concealed when not in your resident state.

I have my great grandad's Savage Model 99 in 300sav, great old rifle.
A very underrated design.

my main deer/bear rifle is a 1936 Savage Model 99 in .300 Savage. Of course we all know that the .300 Savage is the precursor to the .308 Winchester or for you military types, 7.62x51 Nato.

I had a local gunsmith work on the trigger a bit. Now there is no creep and she lets off at about 4 lbs. I have tried most factory loaded ammo and Winchester 150 gr. SP is the most accurate. 

I topped off my Savage Modle 99 with a Leupold VX.HOG 1-4 scope. I leave the scope on 2x as most of my shots have been under 75 yards. I have the rifle zero'd in at 200 yards just in case that big buck walks out on the other side of the field or power-line. 

Sorry guys and gals, I could go on and on about the Savage Model 99.

Many years ago I owned a type 53 and a type 91.

Both were of Russian manufacture.

Like most bolt actions of the era, they were built to last for centuries. Do not let them fool you into thinking they are not accurate.

I tested mine a great deal and found them to be fully capable of keeping up with the ability of most shooters.

If you can find them on a deal and the ammo.....

If you boys research that Chinese Mosin you'll find that it is Russian made..

And I don't know the extent of your experience with the Mosin Nagant rifle but those sobs are rugged, simple and deadly accurate. Ammo is available, $100 for 440 rounds ain't bad and believe it or not but it's quality stuff too.

Brat, could you please expand on what you did to modify your Mosin, and what the upgrades cost (to your best recollection) ?

My biggest hiccup with the Mosin Nagants is that the bulk ammo is corrosive.

Rah, I'd really like to say I knew how to do all this cool stuff and bedded my own barrel and shit , but I didn't. Hell, I just barely got my AR built.... thank God for AR15.com, et al.... I can shoot, just never learned to work on them. I bought my Mosin about three years ago. Took it to a friend last year and swapped out some infantry reenacting gear I wasn't using anymore (we go back a ways), and gave him $75 to pay the gunsmith, a friend of his.

Then he called me about two weeks later and it looked like that when I got it back. Gunsmith fitted it, bedded it, sighted it in and checked out everything. I hadn't put but about 60 or so rounds thru it before I had it redone. So I'm out $75 and got a clean spot in my closet to put other crap in. It shoots well enough for me. Kills coyotes at the pond from the back patio, that's what I wanted.

I joined a local private gun range last weekend, Strategic Edge, about 12 miles from the house. They have 100, 200, 300, 400, 600, 800 and 1250 yard range. One of the owner's, Tony Shankle, teaches long range shooting, among other stuff, so I'm gonna let pay him to learn some stuff since none of you guys are local for me to learn from.

I wouldn't fret on the corrosive stuff unless you just don't like to clean your rifle. I just spray it down after shooting and clean it like a mofo when I get home from the range. Haven't had or noticed any problems, yet.....

I have a nice Mosin that I never changed because it was purchased with a C&R license. Now that I no longer have the C&R I may have to do what was done with yours brat.

I forget if the Russian ammo uses a Brenden primer or not. If it does you can buy Brenden primers from Tulammo. The issue is extracting them. I saw a video awhile ago (I think TG posted it) that you can half fill a casing with water and then take a tight fitting dowel and insert it into the casing and tap it quickly. The pressure will kick out the Brenden primer.

Just clean the rifle after you shoot it, and you'll never have to worry about corrosive ammo effects. It's a topic that cause much more consternation than is necessary.

I bought a Type 53 a year ago for my birthday. The stock is ok no cracks just looks a little chipped. The bolt was rusty but I cleaned that. The rifling is good and accuracy is good. Other than that its a good carbine and its my first carbine. And a little advice when using corrosive ammo use windex on the action and the barrel.
