Wood Heat 2018
« on: December 29, 2018, 01:54:23 PM »
Attached is a article I wrote concerning the fuel we use for heating the cabin at the redoubt. I have not formatted it to fit here so please just click on the PDF provided.

I want to add, that last year we added a very efficient propane furnace to augment the wood stove. I set the temp on the thermostat for 66 degrees F for most of the day. At 0600 hrs I set the temp to 68 degrees in case I didn't get up at O' Dark Thirty to throw 2-3 logs on the coals.

If MrsMac and i are not here for a couple of days, I set the temp on the furnace to 58 degrees F. If she is here and I am on the road for a few days, she uses the furnace and not the wood stove.

I hope the article clears up any questions you might have for heating in a SHRF scenario.

Peace....

Maybe a dumb question but why did you sell 3.5 cords of wood instead of saving them for next year?

Fair question. Neighbor helping neighbor on the mountain.

My neighbor uses an outside boiler for heat and uses 14-cords a winter. He bought a tri-axle load and he got around 10 cords and it wasn't the best wood at that. He and his family are going through a rough patch right now and I wanted to help them out.

My house currently has a fireplace. Any recommendation on a stove insert or should I just deal with the fireplace. I do plan on putting a wood stove in my shop (it has two stories and is almost 1500 total square feet)

ABSOLUTLY put in an insert.

I had a friend who put one in and he was successful warming his house with it. If you go that route make sure you have a back-uppower source as the better ones have small blowers.

Do you have space to use the fireplace chimney for the flue and set a wood stove in front of the fireplace?

I too am looking at an insert.  Nice brick fireplace and hearth and all that.  But those things cost a good number of pennies.
