SOME SURVIVALISTS RECOMEND
« on: March 29, 2016, 04:19:48 PM »
I've read on some survival sites that you should store food such as macaroni and cheese. What I want to know is should it be repackaged in Mylar with O2 absorbers or in the package it came in. Same goes for pudding mixes and cereals.
Please don't tell me to rotate, my wife doesn't even know that I'm prepping. She suffers from incurable normalcy bias.

I would open the boxes/bags and put in ziplocks.  Not the walmart 97 cent a dozen but decent quality with a smaller absorber inside after squeezing out softly.

Then in a mylar bag in a bucket with bag squoze down and several big absorbers in that before heat sealing.

Or just vacuum seal with absorber in a bag that goes in a mylar bag sucked down and sealed after the last chunk of the dry ice in the bottom of the bag (with a big towel separating ice and contents) finishes and gets squoze down and sealed with one big absorber inside.

I'd skip it unless you've got butter and milk stored.. cause without that it ain't the cheesiest.. I would prefer a higher quality cereal like barley.. what we are talking about is carbs right?

Yes I have canned butter and powdered milk. Mac and Cheese as a side dish to the meat I have stored.

JoJo, I have a question that could help other (Closet) preppers.

How do you keep what you are doing secret from your wife? Secret may be the wrong adjective - Covert might be better.

This question is open to all folks on this site too. How do you do it if your spouce or family would be concerned with your actions?

Thanks

The garage is mine, I have shelves and plastic storage bins under my work bench, I also have kitty litter plastic containers. Defensive preps are kept in the house. If you don't keep the garage neat you can hide stuff in plane site. Everything is in plastic containers.
The garage never goes below 54 degrees or above 88  degrees, I'm always checking to make sure.
Last winter we had a power outage that lasted for 4 hours, from 6PM tp 10PM. She never did ask me where the emergancy lights came from.
My wife is afraid of running out of water so we have 4 five gallon water jugs that she knows about and is OK with. I have the top shelf on my garage freezer loaded with 1/2 gallon jugs which I told her the reason I had them was to keep the cost of running the freezer down. Full freezers cost less to run.
I'm going to start collecting toilet paper and storing it in the attic.
There are hundreds of ways to hide stuff such as if you have a suite you rarely use you can hide small items in the pockets  :hiding:

At first I encountered some hesitancy from the ex-wife.. it was easy enough with canned goods and stuff that makes up the 90 day pantry kinda stuff it got a lot harder when the blue barrels started showing up ;)

You're fighting the good fight JoJo!

i've mostly bought the mac n cheese with the powdered cheese, over the years.in which that we go through fast enough where i wont worry about taking it out of the box, untill i go to fix it..then there's the type with the mac and soft/cream style cheese in it.i've been waiting on getting it,untill i get me a vacuum sealer for it..this way i can use the vacuum sealer where it'll take up less space..

as for keeping things unknown to mom.i either keep it stored  high up out of her sight.(degenerative bone structure) keeps her bent over...or i store in my bed room..then there's the kitchen cabinets she don't go into..
