Post by: backwoodsboy on October 20, 2011, 03:30:12 PM
ok so by my house they have a pond with fish in it and some algae growth in it which they spray chemicals in it to kill it and the water from the streets also run in it,would it be safe in wrol situation to take the water and boil it and use for drinking water?

Unfortunately no, boiling will sterilize it but will do nothing about chemical and other toxins, just a small sampling of what you may find in it could include heavy metals, pesticides, excess nitrogen compounds and phosphates from fertilizer runoff, arsenic from any number of sources but most commonly nearby construction (present or past), benzine as well as other nasty chemicals from water runoff of paved areas...

Collect rain water? Could be a viable option.

If you must use retention pond water, you'll need to run it through a charcoal filter after you sterilize it by boiling or chemical means (chlorine, iodine, silver, oxygen, etc.)
In a pinch, you can make a crude charcoal filter by using charcoal produced by a wood fire.  Never under any circumstance burn or use charcoal from chemical treated lumber.  There are many examples of how to make a charcoal water filter on Youtube.

I don't actually have any experience with them, but they seem to be one of the more respected names.

To sanitize that water, you should create a chloride solution. Get pool shock with the active ingredient of CALCIUM HYPOCLORITE (that is very important, nothing else will do). Add 1 "heaping" teaspoon to 2 gallons of water. That will be your chloride solution. To sanitize that water, add 1 part chloride solution to 100 parts of that water. Let it sit to allow the chloride to volatize into the atmosphere. Then it is good to drink. If you want to FULLY get rid of the chlorine taste, filter through an activated carbon filter (ala Brita).
