Get Back On Track
« on: June 13, 2016, 08:53:18 AM »
Last night at around 0130 hrs I woke up to MrsMac having a rough diabetic night.

She was sweating profusely and I could not wake her up. Got her glucose meter and the reading was 29 - A normal glucose reading is around 120. Went into action to get her blood sugar to rise by pouring (Literally poured) lemonade down her throat. Then eating high carbohydrate items once I had got her to sit up. Finally, after about 30 minutes her blood sugar started to increase. By the time her blood sugar hovered around 120, an hour had passed and it was time to hit the sack.

While laying in bed trying to go to go to sleep post the drama, I mulled over my complacency towards prepping of late and some great discussions I have had in the past with ThatGuy and Gapatriot.

Thatguy, Gapatriot and I have had many discussions over the past months, on how this forum has started to crab (go side-wise).

While we have attained our Vision, we have crabbed a bit from the Mission Statement.

Specifically, we are mostly ( I am the worst one here) posting News & Political items and crabbing away from what we will need in the future for survival. Simple things like: Soap, power, food, clean water, medical... The list goes on and on. We have driven members from the forum because we rehash the same thing (s) over and over again. In many cases, those items are male oriented.

With that long rambling diatribe complete, I would like to encourage forum members to refocus on the Mission Statement and post subjects that we may be needing in the not so far distant future. Prepping questions are as good as posting product knowledge or skills, because these questions spur knowledge being shared. Bringing things back out to light from the archieves is another way of spurring dialog too.

For the future, may I suggest a 1:1 ratio of News & Politics or just fun stuff to posting prepping related subjects or questions.

Thank you to all Unchainedpreppers in advance for the time you spend on this forum and your future participation.

I hope your wife is feeling better today. Above all else family first.
To get to the rest of your post I feel some politics and political news is necessary for the prepper. Man made disasters usually are political in nature and as far as politics we need to know who are leaders might be and their leanings.

JoJo, thanks. I only shared MrsMac's drama to get everyone's attention and to point out how close we can be to disaster.

I agree with your statement, "To get to the rest of your post I feel some politics and political news is necessary for the prepper." My short rant was for us on the forum to not forget the nuts & bolts of why we are here. Specifically, the Beans, Band-aides and Bullets. Hence my 1:1 suggestion on posting here.

One News & Politics to each prepping DIY, question, archive reposting, et cetera to help us all, get better and ready for the times to come.

Thanks for your comments JoJo.

I really hope Mrs Mac is feeling better! How scary!! Thank goodness you were there & knew what to do!

As to the point of your post, I think it's great. I have to admit I just ignore most of the posts that have to do with politics or guns* or humor as they really aren't what prepping is about to me.  I think things like gardening, cooking, hunting, community, supplies, building, auto care/repair, sewing/fabric care & repair, etc. are far more important than how to load an AK47 and play soldier. You've inspired me to start putting together some posts about things I'm working on/learning/etc. Thanks!

* Not that I don't think guns are an important part of prepping, but let's face it most of those conversations are of a more military mindset. If I'm having to be a one-woman army things have gone past SHTF right to "we're @%#+>="!

JM, wife's dad was on a needle 4 times a day.  He once took an overnight shot (30 units standard dose) intended to be his long lasting  stuff but filled his needle with his pre-meal fast acting stuff (5 units standard dose) and when I got a blood test he was at 18.  Same general condition otherwise as you describe for your wife.

Discussed with his doc and got a script for glucagon needle.  Get them, learn to fill the syringe and inject it.  That works better and faster than anything oral to get it back to reasonable range.  Did it a time or 2 again when he was in his high 20s/low 30s.

Each time in about 10 minutes he was up 35 or so points and beginning to regain brain function and awareness.

@ Nemo, I have two in the fridge. Her Endocrinologist wrote me a script last year. We have been dealing with this for the past 40 years and old habits die hard. Maybe I should open the case and read how to use the pens.

MrsMac has been on the insulin pump since 2005 which has been a big help. You should see the foolishness she has to go through at the airport security lines. However this last drama was caused because she didn't want to spend the $224- for a bottle of insulin and was using old insulin pens hoping to put off the purchase.  We fixed the problem early yesterday morning when the local pharmacy opened.

With that written, the MrsMac story was to encourage folks to get back (like me) on the prepping trail. Things can change in a blink of an eye. Today the stock market is 17800 tomorrow it 7800. Today you can't sleep and get up and are listening to the Mr. Coffee pot perking as you type out nonsense on the computer and ZAP no electricity as an EMP has happened.

Get my drift here....

@ Gadget...Thanks.

Get them out. Learn them.  They can truly be life savers.

Then start to figure and learn how to do without batteries for the pump and bottles for the needle.

Hi All,

Take a look a a plant called bitter gourd.

You can get it dried and make teas with it.

It can help with diabetes.

http://www.diabetes.co.uk/natural-therapies/bitter-melon.html

Not sure if it can help.

Wife tried it and it did work for her.
