Gas cans
« on: August 14, 2017, 06:22:15 PM »
I want to buy two more gas cans and replacement spouts for the ones I have. I'm not looking for the steel cans, far to expensive besides I would like to buy locally. I went online for the non-safety spouts and was surprised to find out that they are more expensive than a gas can. In some cases three times the price.
With my disability it is not only hard to use a safety spout but dangerous. I'll just have to modify what I the new ones.
Those of you who have a portable generator, do you store it with a filled tank in case of emergency's or do you run it out of gas each time you test it? I'm new to generators, just got my first one.

I saw a ad that let you retrofit your gas cans to the old version. When I find it again I will post it.

Just some suggestions from old Johnymac.

1) Obviously use stabilizer for your stored gas in containers BUT use non ethanol gas. Google/Duckduckgo "non ethanol
gas" and your zip code to find it. No lie, I had non ethanol gas in my generator for two years and when I needed it
back in April it started up with just a few pulls of the cord.
2) I store my generator with gas (Read #1 from above) but the carburetor is empty. Just before I turn it off I shut off
the gas feed seacock and run the generator till the gas in the carburetor runs out. I actually wait a few minutes when
it first runs dry and start it up again. There is always a residual in the carburetor. Let that run dry and I am done.

Last, get a propane carburetor for your generator. Two fuels are better than one. "One is none and two is one."

There is an ongoing argument about running the carb until its dry. one side says it keeps the carb from gumming up. The other side says that it causes the engine to run too lean an will burn the pistons(or piston as the case may be).  I personally turn off the petcock and let it run for about 30 seconds and then shut the engine down. Many years ago I learned that running an engine rich makes it run cooler and running it lean makes run hotter. I see the benefit in running it dry but I'm aftraid to burn a piston.

Another option if you are going to not use your generator for an extended period is to clock the peacock and empty the carburetor bulb and replace.

To leave stabilizer in the carburetor for an extended period is not good either as stabilizer grits up which can clog your carb.

I've already done that and there isn't a Pure Gas station for at least 60 miles and it's in another state.
I always use stabilizer for the 12 1/2 gallons that I keep on hand.

Is there a active race track or motor cycle store near you like Cycle Gear. Both carry non ethanol gas in in 5 and 10 gallon cans. Just a suggestion.
