For anyone new to prepping this is intended for you. Below I have posted a chart of a very basic 1 year food supply for one person. The chart is based on 2009 prices so your actual milage may vary. The prices on the right column are optional on the left the very basic(and cheapest). This does not include any meats, meats do no last long term. The only way to have long term meat is to have livestock! If you don't have any live stock now, I would start with chickens, ducks, or rabbits. One thing to remember with rabbits, they are a very lean meat and lack essential fats we need to survive. This list does not include any seasonings, so your meals are going to very bland. This is where you should start on your preps (before going out and buying an AK or AR)!
Edit: Most grocery stores will give you used food grade buckets with lids for free. Just go to the deli/bakery area and ask. It may not be mylar but it is a start just store in a cool dark place.
