Winter Carrots - DAMN!
« on: November 17, 2013, 12:17:41 PM »
I usually plant a section of carrots in mid-July/ early August and thin out out by the beginning of October. Then cover the remaining carrots with straw (Not hay as there is seeds mixed in the hay). I harvest enough weekly for a dinner or two through-out the winter. But damn...I forgot this year!

I have done this with white (purple top) turnips too but the turnips never make it to January as I pull them and eat them. I forgot them too!

I was mentioning to MrsMac today at breakfast (Always go out to a restaurant for breakfast Sunday morning's) that I really need to start a planning calender of when things need to be done starting in January. We don't want to forget things like the damn carrots and turnips again.

Remember that as you get older, memory is the second thing to go!

I already know, but somebody has got to say it. "What's the first thing?"

lol! On a more serious note, I'm planning on making a spreadsheet where I can enter days to harvest, date planted, etc. and have it spit out when harvest will be (or vice versa, when I want to harvest and it'll tell me when to plant). Then I'll put pertinent dates on the calendar.

Great idea Wellie!

I have one in excel. My problem is I don't open the spreadsheet regularly.

I think this year when the local pharmacy or grocery store is giving out those free calendars I am going to take an hour or so and transfer it to my free calendar. Of course I could do all of that on a computer and then print it too.  Then put the calendar into a three ring binder with extra blank pages between months for notes.

Then you would have a history of successes and failures over the years to leave to your children to help them in the future if SHTF and you were not around.

That would be way too organized though.  ;)

Yeah, my spreadsheet would be cheating so I don't have to do math. A notebook like that would be tantamount to being productive! Can't have that! ;)
