FLMSG usage with the ERIN digi NET?
« on: January 06, 2022, 09:55:40 PM »
Random thought from the new guy. Anyone have any interest in using FLMSG to send our reports? FLMSG is pretty sweet, in that it grabs whatever gets sent through the sender's FLMSG and holds it in a RX queue so you can save or view later if you want to. It doesn't really take anything to set up either, the only important thing is you "autosend" your message.

Also, just a reminder for those of you who might not have that RxID box checked, if someone changes digital modes on you (like going to MFSK32 instead of cont 4/250) and they have TxID checked, your FLDIGI will automatically change modes. This is pretty handy for those that send longer reports and want to change modes to reduce TX time.

If you don't want to run FLMSG on the receive side, you don't need to as you'll still see the report in FLDIGI.

To Obh's point, FLMSG is a sweet way to send and of course receive digital messages. It allows you to pre type out your report and send in totality. The folks that receive the report can store it in a file on their computer for later perusal. The only challenge is that you can not have a discussion amongst the group - Not that we discuss things anyway.

Thoughts?

Took a little doing to get it all set up, but now it works really well. I'm impressed enough that I want to try more, maybe some different modes or VHF. I've also been enjoying JS8CALL, which can be used for (non-secure) group messaging.

Even if not everyone uses it, the message/report sent will still be visible in the FLDIGI window, so its really no loss.

I think I'll send my report that way this week (assuming I'm not taking my son to wrestling practice again) and we can get a taste.

Standardization is a good thing for when it really hits the fan. If we change to say, mfsk32 mode, the reports will only take a minute or two to send instead of 4-5. Everyone can get on and get their reports out/receive other reports in a few minutes if we continue to shotgun it instead of a directed net. This is how we do the SITREP NET on Thursdays for AMRRON.

The only challenge is that you can not have a discussion amongst the group - Not that we discuss things anyway.

Thoughts?

You can reserve comments for later, and just use the FLDIGI window for followups.

Reminder for the digital net guys, have RxID turned on in FLDigi, otherwise you're gonna get gibberish when I Tx my report.

For those before and after me, depending on the Tx order, I will switch the mode from contestia to mfsk32, give my report, then switch the mode back to contestia for the next person. Whoever comes after me can send as soon as the mode changes back.
