I'm using a Yaesu FT-270r that works in VHF 2m band.
You have plenty of accessories really cheap, battery life is awesome (months if used sporadically) and its IPx7, that means you can submerge it for 30 minutes and it will still work.

Spirit,

do a search on radios or communication. There is a lot of info already on this subject such as: http://straightprep.com/forum/index.php?topic=343.msg5795#msg5795 (http://straightprep.com/forum/index.php?topic=343.msg5795#msg5795)

This might be a quicker way of gaining the info you are looking for. Good luck.
