Impromptu Net Tonight at 2200 hrs Eastern
« on: July 14, 2019, 02:06:46 PM »
A few folks sent me email's and asked for another go at a net tonight. I picked the usual ERIN/Unchainedpreppers freq of 3.962 Mhz. The 75/80-meter band opens up at that time for folks above the MD line and expands south throughout that hour to 2300 hrs. eastern.

If you are planning on playing, drop me a PM or say so here on this thread.

73 folks!

I turned on the radio this afternoon, but got stuck out on lawnwork longer than I expected, so missed the 1300 net...
Will try again this evening.

KC1XXX came in strong but would  fade out some. When he came on strong, it was like he was sitting in the same room with me.   I could hear KA2XXX very well in New York.  I was on an Icom 7200 using a NVIS antenna build found on this forum.

Brother you did GREAT! On your new home brew antenna you hit us on 40 & 75/80-meters. Your antenna wasn't the issue propagation was.  ;)

Ummmm.... actually his antenna may be part of the issue.  It's a NVIS antenna, so its emissions are specifically designed for close radio contacts.  A general purpose dipole will cover a broader area, the NVIS a closer area.  I could hear Dana, but he was right at the noise level, which is to be expected given the distance and the antenna.  So his NVIS antenna is working well.  The IC-7200 was doing a good job, that's a great, simple, rugged radio, I've got a couple of them.

I could hear everyone well this evening.  Johny, which antenna were you using?  The new radio has sharper audio, which cuts through the background noise better.  I'd say that's the one you should use for nets.

Thanks for the reports!  The antenna did far better than expected.  I was in central West Virginia and was able to check in with the Unchained Preppers Net in PA and with TAPRN in GA.  Quite a lot more coverage than I expected.  Glad to hear I was coming through.  Prince William County, VA has a net tonight so I'll try check in with them.  That can give me a range to the East.

I was the first check in on TAPRN and I heard you fairly well. If you are WV8### you were not anywhere near full quieting but I heard every word. I'm 40 miles South of Richmond, Va.

Oh yes!  That's a great report!  I had no clue how I was doing.  I tried to listen in on Prince William County, VA sub-regional net tonight but didn't hear a thing.

I have a 160 dipole and a $20 "80 meter HamStick" vertical. I was on the 7 foot tall vertical mounted at 30 feet up on a arm sticking off the side of the tower. It works better on 80 meters than my 160 meter dipole. You never know what is going to work the best until you key up.

Jackalope,
I went back and forth from my multi-band antenna I built and wrote about somewhere here on the Radio Board. My TS-590s is now in the Faraday cage and am using the IC-735 I bought from a friend for a song. I have the mic gain tuned to just above the recommended level using the ALC meter for a guide. So just into the red.

The NVIS antenna Sunday gave off a lot of ground noise while the multi-band's ground noise was relatively low.
