More Baofeng radios
« on: August 26, 2019, 05:39:59 PM »
What? More Baofengs? I have about 15 Baofengs. Four of them are 8 watters. The rest are 5 watters. I just ordered 2 more 8 watters because I think the Tariff problem will make them harder to get or be a lot more expensive. They were 2 complete radio packages for $56 total. That's the same price as two 5 watters. Why do I have so many of them? Well, they're so cheap, I can instantly replace one if it breaks and I also want to have a large supply of 5 watters to pass out to my family and neighbors in case of an emergency. Which neighbors will I pass them out to? Only the one's who are armed and can be useful in an emergency. Fortunately, I live out in the Country and won't have to worry about urban protection methods. Since my neighbors and family members aren't Hams, I programmed all the non licensed frequencies into them. I programmed them with CHIRP and the upper "A" display shows the alphanumeric such as MURS 1 etc. and the lower "B" display shows the frequency. So far all my relatives have been given a pair of radios. Do my neighbors know that I'm a prepper? Yep. Do they know how much stuff I have? Nope, and I'm going to keep it that way. By the way...… I've been using UV5R's for several years and I've never had one quit on me. Extra batteries? You bet your butt I have a ton of extra batteries. Some standard size and some large size. Get 'em while they're still available. :DrillSgt:

I had one, just got a few more, will add some more next week.  Was it this pair you got?

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B074Z63YFM

When I ordered it a few weeks ago it was $56/pr.  Now it's up to $60 & the ones with the smaller batts are up to $53.  I wanted to get a tri-bander, so I'll be getting that & a few others just to change stuff up.
`

This is only a 5 watt dual band, but it's supposed to be more rugged & water resistant.

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00YMN0SCG
`

Another tri-bander with the bigger batt & 2 antennas.

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07VD7P3X5
`

Tri-Power with 2 batts & other goodies.

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07VJ38MTW
`

Tri-Power in yellow with the larger batt.

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07J4K2WYD
`

I'm just buying radios till the ban goes into effect, I'll get more accessories down the road.  If they come with extra batts, large batts or other goodies that makes it a good deal, I don't mind spending a few extra to save a bit in the long run.

You found a little better deal than I did. Mine showed them with the smaller batteries but I have several extra large batteries. Yes it was a pair for $56 that I ordered and they are on their way. If mine show up with the larger batteries, that will be a bonus. Some BONUS INFO. The charging stand that comes with the radio uses a wall wart that sends 12 volts to the charging stand. The charging stand has a voltage regulator in it that reduces the charge voltage to 8.35 volts to charge the 7.2 volt batteries. If you have a cigarette lighter plug that has the same size plug and has a CENTER HOT pin, you can charge your handy-talkies from the car just in case there is no power to your house. Another bit of info that might save you some grief is the 8 watt handi-talkies get hot really quick and heat is bad for the transmitter. If the handi-talkie gets hot in your hand, you've gotten a bit too long winded and you should practice using very short transmissions. I had a friend who had an 8 watter and he hooked it up to an outside antenna that was 90 feet up his tower. He was playing with it as a base station he got long winded and the transmitter quit after 3 days of hard use. He was making 50 mile simplex contacts using that 8 watts on a massive antenna system.

Latest update on the 8 watters. I checked into the local ARES net on Wednesday night. Instead of using my base radio, I put a Nagoya 771 (15") rubber duck and a speaker mike on one of the 8 watters and went out in the front yard and checked in as a portable. The repeater is 15 miles away and the repeater antenna is on top of a 5 story Hospital. The Net Host said I was full quieting into the machine.
