Title: Last Man Standing Station.
Post by: pkveazey on March 28, 2021, 09:41:16 PM
I was listening at around 7.224 Mhz tonight and the Last Man Standing Station was on and it was a monster pile up. I kept throwing my call out and finally got in. Tim Allen and several of the crew from the Last Man Standing show are Hams and I knew about that but I never expected to hear them. The guy said that Monday and Tuesday are the last two recording days for the show.

Yeah, but I was using the 160 meter dipole. I still have to figure out why the 40 meter Hamstick is acting up. I can hear on the Hamstick but a 5/9+20 signal on the Dipole is about 5/3 on the Hamstick.

Narrow bandwidth on hamstick.  A hamstick on 75 and 40 meters is severely compromised, it's never going to outperform a full size wire antenna.

After I read your post yesterday, I decided to give it a go last night.

I was able to qso with the KA6LMS/P1 station, but was not able to get through the pile up for the /2 station.  I did hear a station in Italy and one in Macedonia calling cq dx and talked with them.  Just exchanged name, qth and signal report but it was kind of cool.

By the way PKv, I often use my 160-meter antenna for 40-meters. Maybe tonight I will do half my NCS duties on my regular G5RV and the other half on my 160-meters antenna.

Getting through the pile up is pretty tough. It took me about 15 minutes of jumping in right at the moment he let off the key. Everybody else seemed to be using the same technique. For a while I thought that I didn't have a big enough signal but I finally made it.

That was pretty much what I tried to do too.  I was only running 100W through an inverted V dipole with the center at about 30 ft.  It can be tricky trying to compete with the guys with the big amps and beam antennas.  But I think it is a more realistic way to train for comms in a grid-down situation.

It ran 3/24-30/21.  The 30th was the day they filmed the last episode.

I got an email today with a certificate for participating in the LMS Special Event. It's funny, I didn't even know what it was. I hadn't heard of it, we haven't had a TV in years. I heard someone calling CQ Last Man Standing and I answered. I thought it was some kind of sleep deprivation QSO party.
