I gave a radio away today
« on: October 12, 2021, 08:54:58 PM »
I have a longtime friend who recently became a Ham Technician. I have two IC 718 transceivers and one of them has no audio unless you use headphones so I stopped by his house tonight and gave it to him. We've been pressing him to upgrade his license so now he should get motivated.

This is the way. My elmer gave me an Icom IC-707, really motivated me to get into HF and upgrade. And to buy a radio with some filters! I passed that radio on to a friend who watched my show, he got his General soon afterward. I'm always on the lookout for good deals on older, simpler transceivers to have on hand to give out.

It is part of the hobby.  The first radio that I ever used is a Hallicrafters S-38D, which was given to me by a family friend in the radio broadcast industry and I still have that radio, nearly 60 years later.  I've lost count of the radios that I've given to either new hams or financially strapped hams.  I think the last one was a Baofeng, and the one before that was a Kenwood TS-520 to a newly licensed ham that didn't have funds to invest in the hobby.  I've given away power supplies and tuners too.  It's good to get new hams as involved as possible in the hobby.  I always ask them not to sell the radio if they decide to get rid of it, but instead pass it on, like I did.
