It is part of the hobby. The first radio that I ever used is a Hallicrafters S-38D, which was given to me by a family friend in the radio broadcast industry and I still have that radio, nearly 60 years later. I've lost count of the radios that I've given to either new hams or financially strapped hams. I think the last one was a Baofeng, and the one before that was a Kenwood TS-520 to a newly licensed ham that didn't have funds to invest in the hobby. I've given away power supplies and tuners too. It's good to get new hams as involved as possible in the hobby. I always ask them not to sell the radio if they decide to get rid of it, but instead pass it on, like I did.
