ERIN/Unchainedpreppers Net Sunday January 13, 2019
« on: January 10, 2019, 10:21:51 AM »
I am proposing an ERIN/UnchainedPrepper net this coming Sunday, January 13, 2019. Looking at a Propagation Predictor, 20-meters will be wide open from 1500 to 2000 hrs eastern. Due to the fact that there are football playoffs this Sunday which some may be interested in and it is Sunday, a family day in many of our homes - I will ask the group what time works best for you.

Please respond by 1800 hrs tomorrow (Fri. Jan. 11, 2019) as to what time works best for you. If I receive no input, I will put the times on the wall of the cabin and throw a dart.  :o

With the things that are happening all around us, domestically and globally, I really think it is time we reinvigorate our prepping which communication play's a major part.

Just post your first and second time choice on this thread.

JohnyMac

I've never had a lot of luck on 20 meters but if its open, it should be interesting. As far as time is concerned, I'm not sure what to say. We are having company coming on Sunday and having my favorite grandson here is more important to me than my radio. If I'm available, I will definitely try to participate in the net. Just post the time and I'll try. By the way....... What's a football?

PK, I miss typed, it is 40-meters not 20-meters.  :troutSlap:  :P

When I typed it out yesterday, I was literally on 20-meters at the time. My only excuse is "oldtimers".  ;)

Yes I will post the PACE later today however it is looking like 1900 hrs due to propagation. I also agree with your comment, "...having my favorite grandson here is more important to me than my radio."

Hope you can make it.

Okay, just post the general area of the frequency on 40 meters that you'll be using and I'll hopefully be available to participate.

I have had good use of 40m during the day lately. In the mornings there has been some NVIS propagation on 40m. After dusk it goes long and 80m opens up. For NVIS, 80 or 160m seems best in the MidAtlantic region right now during night. I have found few users on 160m. Since I took the Brushbeater RTO class and NC Scout mentioned it I think it’s a nice option to have. I’m using mostly JS8 right now on 7.110 and 3.588 with the AMRRON folks. I look forward to the net on Sunday. Look for JRD.

Yes DD 160 is working well east of the Mississippi down to Florida and up to Ontario.  I would recommend 160-meters for the net however there is only a few of us that have a 160-meter wire in the air. I do and have made quite a few QSO's using the frequency this winter.

At this time there will be two ERIN nets. One at 1500 hrs on 40-meters and another at 1900 hrs on 75/80-meters. I am waiting till later today to post the PACE.

Good stuff.

Yeah, I heard the station working you, but I'm not hearing you, plus there's a QSO on 7.218 with a couple of strong stations.

Yup, we're ready to roll on 75 meters.  Say hi to Karen.  I'll tell Mrs. J "Hi!", when I see her next time, hopefully this coming week.  I haven't seen her for a couple of weeks now due to weather and road conditions.

I could hear everyone well, except for the W1 station in New Hampshire.  Both IIG and PK had great signals coming up this way.  I did have a noise level of S7 throughout the net.  I was disappointed that the CTX-10 couldn't make the cut this evening, though I was hearing everyone well on that radio.  Thanks Johny for running the net, and leading the discussion regarding poultry.  I look forward to the next one!  By the way, the temperature is down to -3 F at this time.

Bummer about the CTX-10 but you did RX the group on it. Also, do you do anything special heat wise for the chickens when the temps get down below zero.

Hey PK, great hearing ya last evening

Yeah, when I see that a spell of below zero weather is coming I usually give the girls a layer of fresh bedding, which provides their feet and legs with some extra insulation.  Their water is already electrically heated, and for the goose there is an an electrically heated pail.  There is also a thermostatically controlled heater for the coop:  www.amazon.com/Cozy-Products-Chicken-Heater-Brooder/dp/B01LX9K1JI/ref=sr_1_1_sspa   In the past, I've used coop heat lamps, but there were many bulbs broken by the girls.  I don't know what they're doing in there (what goes on in the coop, stays in the coop) but I was getting tired of the hens breaking a bulb every few weeks.  The chicken heater has been a good solution.  With the heat lamps, if they broke a bulb, it was possible that I wouldn't find out for a few days, and as a result the chickens would end up with frozen combs, and they were definitely having a challenge keeping warm.  They seem to appreciate the even warmth of the heating panel.  The only time their water freezes is when the temperatures get down into the -30 F range.  We had only one morning like that last winter, and the solution is to bring the water inside the house for a few hours; at that temperature the poultry isn't too active anyways.

I heard you on 40m on the early net.  I didn't realize it was you because I forgot to copy your call sign along with the other net info.
I couldn't hear a thing in 80m during the late net. I couldn't even hear a regular net out of GA that is on every evening about that time.
Maybe next time.
