I think that I have lost my mind.
« on: December 23, 2021, 03:56:41 AM »
I just ordered 6 more BaoFeng Handi-talkies. I got to thinking that when things get really bad and the other folks nearby realize that there is a radio network operating around them, they will start looking to get in on it and CB is not going to be the best option. Even though I already have a good stock of backup radios, I pretty much want to keep that backup stock just in case I need them. The one thing that jumped out at me was NO FREE SHIPPING. In the past, I always chose the shipping dates that allowed free shipping. Hmmm... That's going to cost me $15 more than the last batch that cost me $0. When and if our radio network becomes necessary, I'm pretty sure most of the group will decide to extend their range by installing BASE STATION antennas even if they have to build them or modify other antennas. The best distance Ive ever gotten out of a 5 watter with a rubber Duck was 14 miles back to my home Base Station. Conditions nust have been good that day because I haven't been able to duplicate it. However, I think Base station antennas up at a decent height could reach out as much as 20 miles to another Base Station antenna. keep in mind that I'm a flatlander and that wouldn't be so good in the mountains unless you were on top of a mountain. I hope these folks don't get it in their head that they want to try Crossband Repeaters because that would draw a lot of unwanted attention from regulators. If I hear any talk about setting up repeaters, I'm going to push really hard to get them to just relay messages. There is a very sketchy and not legal option...... All of the radios have the ability to turn on the SCRAMBLER function. The frequencies that we will be using don't allow the use of Scramblers. At the moment only myself and one neighbor monitor the neighborhood frequency all the time. When I passed out the radios I told them that for the moment, 24/7 monitoring wasn't really necessary. That might change in the near future and I might have to ask them to monitor 24/7. Fortunately, our newly elected local state legislator has gotten a General class Ham license and I can reach him if he's outside his house with his Handi-talkie. Hmmm..... It looks like I might just have to build him a Base Station antenna so he he can operate from inside his home. Crap!! I hope I don't have to give him my backup HF rig if things become necessary. I've gotten so much prepper supplies that I seem to now only focus on Communications in my County.

For distance on a HT, build a measuring tape Yagi or Moxon antenna.

When I first got my Technicians Ticket, I used a BaoFeng to hit a repeater about 22-miles away with ease using a Moxon antenna. I built the antenna for around $3-. The 25-feet of coax cost 8x more than the home brew antenna I built. I was pretty impressed with that little Moxon antenna, 5-watt chinesium radio, traveling 20-plus miles over very mountainous terrain.

Since that first home brew antenna, I have built 2, 2-meter Yagi type antennas. The best and I highly recommend, was a measuring tape antenna. Here is just one of a dozen YT videos on how to build that antenna,

Here is a Moxon YT video, again there are dozens out there.

As a side note, I have several Dakota alarms placed strategically around the redoubt. The little rubber duck antenna that came with the alarm is good for a couple hundred yards. NC Scout suggested I pull it off and replace it with a 2-meter dipole antenna using 12-gauge solid housing wire. I picked up a "split post BNC adapter". Fastened 19.25" piece of wire to one post and another 19.25" piece of wire to the other post. Put it up vertically on the tree holding the Dakota alarm and ran a 3-foot jumper connector between the home brew antenna and alarm. Viola' I have an antenna that sends a signal for a mile away.

Good stuff

Reading all this radio stuff and trying to figure it out has made me lose mine.  But I think its being found again in small bits.

If you need a second magazine, its time to call in air support.

Hey! That reminds me..... Have you had a chance to play with the new Handi-talkie?

Nope, neighbor has not be able to get by to do the local repeater stuff.  My abilities on those things would fry it and couple of yours (and one or 2 in NE PA) if I try by myself.

Just keep in mind that alot of the new Baofeng radios are firmware locked to the the ham bands only. Meaning that radio won't do FRS/GMRS/MURS/etc. Not that its a problem, but if you have an older one programmed to include the non-ham frequencies, the radios won't be the same.

WOW! My BaoFengs showed up today. That is a week earlier than they said they would. Now I have to start programming them. I made sure that the radios I ordered where wide open and not frequency limited to just the Ham bands. I programmed one already and checked it out. Yep it'll go wherever I want it to. Its a tedious process programming all those radios but I don't want to get caught in a situation where I don't have the use of my computer. They'll all be ready to go at a moments notice. When I'm finished, I'll have to wrap the boxes in aluminum foil for EMP reasons.
