My 18-year old neighbor, who has a General FCC license, left yesterday to work at the Philmont Boy Scout camp in Cimarron New Mexico.
For his adventure, I loaned him the following,
Yaesu 817nd
LDG Z-817 tuner
17-meter resonate antenna made and donated to him by N9SAB antenna located on Ebay,
40,20,15,10 meter EF antenna made by N9SAB and donated by me,
2-meter car antenna,
Digirig sound card and cables,
Spiderbeam 10-meter telescoping pole,
Home brew 12v cigarette lighter with Anderson Power Poles for the radio connection,
A DIY mast holder for the Spiderbeam,
A 12volt power supply for IF he has access to 110/120 v at camp,
Oodles of software and links like;
- RepeaterBook,
- Manuals,
- Fldigi and other relevant software,
- Other.
I tried to get him to buy a Lithium battery from Bioenno Power but he did not want to spend the $115-. I figure that he will buy one by the time he is at the camp for a week or so. It is a great light weight battery and he will want one.
For the trip, he mounted the 817 on the dash of his car and preloaded into the radio several repeaters along his route to NM.
The plan is when he gets there, and he receives his work schedule, we will set up a schedule for digital comms. Looking at a propagation predictor, the best band for digital comms from Cimarron to my AO will be 17-meters.
I will periodically report back on his progress. If things work as planned (No Murphy) I will share the freq. and times of our QSO's. Some here may want to participate.
