Confirmed Case of Ebola in Glasgow Scotland
« on: December 29, 2014, 02:04:57 PM »
Well............ Here we go.

An aid worker arrived in Glasgow returning from helping in Sierra Leon. Gets on a flight via Casablanca, Frankfurt and London Heathrow.

Gets up this morning feeling unwell and goes to get checked. So now the individual is in Isolation.

I know that we had beat the Ebola Panic thing to death already.

I would however like to make a few observations now.

1. There is a flawed assumption that the great plans and preparations in the west will prevent a major outbreak. This assumes that the weakest link in the chain will perform flawlessly. (Human Beings)

2. This is early and there is not a great deal of info on this as of yet. This individual either did not undergo a pre-return quarantine or quarantine was of insufficient length. I suspect that there was no quarantine. (Exhibit 1 - Evidence the human factor of the equation)

OK rant over for the moment....

Hi all,

Update here.

It is confirmed that there is no quarantine protocol for health care workers returning to the UK from assisting in the Ebola Crisis.

All that is in place is a recommended self monitoring regime of taking your temp twice a day.

No requirement to even self quarantine for any period of time.

They can be back in the UK within a day of working with Ebola patients.

Just wonderful huh?

Amen ThatGuy!

Even with the best plans in place it only takes a single screw up to release the bug into the wilds of Scotland.  Germany.  England.  Morocco.

If you need a second magazine, its time to call in air support.

Hi Nemo,

Sorry for leaving out a link. I was reporting the news as I heard it on Sky News.

Hi All,

I was not doing a Doom and Gloom thing by posting this thread.

What caused me post it is based upon a few observations.

1. U.S. Troops that have been sent to help in the fight against Ebola face a common sense quarantine period in the regime of bringing them back. This as far as I know applies to every U.S. Armed Forces member deployed in this.

2. Aside from the above stated common sense measure, there does not to be a similar precaution in place for anyone else. This I am highlighting in this thread has been evidenced this week in Scotland.

3. I see this as a premier example of what I term as "Human Arrogance". "Human Arrogance" is in my opinion potentially a disease in its self. This disease is often found to be more prevalent in First World Societies. The prime symptom of this disease is insidious in its self. This symptom is the "Belief that we are in command of the natural world. That we are the masters of our universe and that we can easily overcome any threat the natural world throws our way."

4. Thus we see irrefutable evidence this week here in the UK, that "WE" "Masters of the Universe" feel it is to paranoid to emplace any type of mandatory quarantine measures on people that are "Doing great work" fighting the Ebola Outbreak.

I honestly do not feel that in respect to this incident I am being unreasonable in highlighting the fact that I feel that we are courting disaster.

I firmly believe that the lessons of history teach us that our arrogance as a race is our greatest enemy.

Do I believe that Ebola will wipe out a huge amount of the population? Most likely not. Yet stranger things have happened.

I do worry about a very simple principle however. Mother nature has kicked us in the balls enough in the past, that we should have learned to ALWAYS take common sense overly cautious measures to prevent getting kicked in the BALLS.

Just saying.

Gadget, using us as a litmus test for your sanity might not be such a great idea :P

but you are correct in your observation that a simple questionnaire, health screening and quarantine of potential carriers would prevent this from going pandemic.. I agree with your assessment that it won't but it does have the very real and very scary potential to do so.

We are currently switching from Rhode Island doctors to local doctors for MrsMac. All of them are across the border in enemy territory (New York State) as the local doctors near the cabin are more VMD then MD's.  :o The few MD's here are either ancient or have lost their license to practice in another state. No seriously

Anyhow, as we interview, hire and then go to her new Dr.'s we are ALWAYS asked if we or a family member has been overseas within the past 21 days. This may have always been a question asked in NY or it might be due to the Ebola scare.
