Quote
Clean, then air dry your feet for eight out of twenty-four hours (preferably eight hours straight). This means no socks. Lying down helps with circulation.
Wipe your shoes or boots out, and allow them to dry.
Change into dry socks a minimum of three times a day.
Keep the rest of your body warm.
Move your legs around, walk, work your toes, raise up and down on your toes?anything to get the blood flowing.

Early Symptoms of Trench Foot

    Blanching or mottled skin
    Swelling
    Cramping
    Numbness

I caught that same article. Trench foot is not joke man.

It goes right with my 'don't be cold, don't be wet' mantra.

Trench foot will F you up.  It seems more dangerous than the enemy itself.

Not in NM, but yeah if it's wet you have got to look after your feet.

My Great Uncle died of trench foot - or the resulting infections - in WW1.  It always stuck in mind from the first time my Grandma told me - so yes... go change your socks!

On a related note - is there a thread on Athlete's Foot?    I had a persistent case of bad Tinea Pedis - 10 years or more with various anti-fungal creams, foot powders, steroids, the lot - nothing worked.  Also got a similar thing in my hands - though much worse. I'd get deep cracks like 3/4mm deep - then infections, all the skin would come off several layers at a time.... :(  The docs reckoned it was an allergic dermatitis so tried everything including elimination diets etc plus the creams in the world.  The steroids made it worse in the end...   Finally at my wits end I did my own research - looked though a whole bunch of papers and photos and eventually found a reference to the hand thing being related to the fungal foot infections.  The recommendation was Terbinafine - for about two months.  I went back to the doc and insisted he prescribe it for me (even though he said it wouldn't help my hands). It did.  That was ten years ago now and I haven't had any problems - hands or feet since - not a thing, no athlete's foot, no dermatitis.  Terbinafine (oral)  will totally kill ALL fungal infections - even the most persistent.  And seems worth doing stuff like this before SHTF.

Moral - do your own research when it comes to medicine and your own body.  Doctors can't know it all.

Wow..... Good topic.

Taking care of your feet is serious business.

You learn as an Infantryman that lesson early on. Much of the time it is learned the hard way. Stupid Privates don't listen until it bites them in the rear. I listened a bit so didn't have to feel the pain of stupidity as badly.

Oh man could I write a book on foot care.

Here is the deal. In hopefully shorter terms.

If you do nothing else in your clothing preps.... Get and carry lots of socks. Real pure wool socks. If they itch to much for you then wear nylon stockings under them. The nylons will assist in reducing the chance of blisters.

Stop and change your socks often. Air your feet out when you do so. Pack and use good foot powder.

I hope this helps.

My wife was a professional chef before she injured her back and was forced to retire. The reason I bring this up is she wore professional Redwing leather shoes all her life while at work and at one time had a bad bought of athletes foot. Nothing seemed to work so her GP sent her to a Podiatrist for help.

He gave a her a prescription for the athletes foot and asked her to throw away an almost new pair of work shoes. He believed that the fungus that caused athletes foot hides in the pores of the leather and will just come back and haunt you. While she was going through getting rid of the athletes foot it was recommended that she change her socks mid-day which she did.

Well it eventually went away but seemed to take for weeks to do so.

After she got rid of the athletes foot he also prescribed using an "over the counter" athletes foot spray that he wanted MrsMac to spray in her shoes each night upon arriving home and taking off her shoes.

These steps really seemed to help her then and during the remainder of her working years.

nice thread.
in a SHTF situation skin diseases will be a huge secondary cause of casualties and deaths.  Been that way since at least Galen (AD200) and probably longer than that - we tend to forget.  thanks for the reminder.

ima go change my socks now.
