Yupper PKv.
May many moons ago when the Red Cross was trying to get donations from school age kids, my father told several stories from WW II about the Red Cross - None good.
My father was a naturalized citizen from Scotland. He received his citizenship around 1953 about 8-months after he was drafted for the Korean War. Just some background...
Anyway growing up during the blitz he like others received Red Cross packages. But only after his mom payed for them. I asked him why she paid since nobody was making her buy them. His response was, "starvation" and "tea". His mom loved tea and the package helped a bit from what she was able to buy at the local market.
Her mom would comment, "those Yanks are so clever" and then cut off the top of the tea bags and then brew tea.
Last story...Sorry...
My father and I went out to pickup a pizza. I was around 10-years old or so. Well the pizza shop was busy and a bit behind so we went across the street to an American Legion to have a beer and a Shirley Temple.
As we sat there at the bar and drank our drinks a loud mouth at the bar started to ridicule my father due to his Scottish accent. Now my father was a member of the Legion and a vet.
It got to a point that the man throwing insults at my father, my usual cam father said, "I served this country in the Army and decided to become an American Citizen. You on the other hand were born with citizenship and never had an opportunity to accept or decline citizenship in America. So, fuck you! Now my father NEVER swore. I was worried that the next step was my father washing out the bully with soap. YUCK!
Well the bar erupted in applause and cheer. Before I knew it there was a dozen shot glasses in front of my father and I on the bar for free drinks. The heckler got up and left the American Legion bar. I never was sow proud of my father. He put this guy in his place without lifting a finger.
Sorry, moved a bit off this subject. Anyway, I am not a big supporter of the Red Cross.
