Physical prepping
« on: September 09, 2013, 10:00:32 AM »
So... it's no secret to anyone who knows me that I am overweight and out of shape.  I don't care so much about the weight, but I do care about the physical health bit.  If the SHTF and I had to live off our land it'd be a damn tough adjustment to all that physical labor.  Saturday I mowed our lawn - just a little area with a push mower, some weed pulling and mostly using the ride-on mower, and I'm moving like a 90 year old!  Top it off with taking a tumble yesterday (for the record, don't try to grab a nylon leash as it's going past you as fast as your dog can run - burned fingers and getting pulled into the ground at what felt like 50 miles an hour is not so much fun) and I am reminded of just how out of shape I am and how I don't know how much I'd like a world where I couldn't walk into a store and get Tylenol.

So, is anyone else working on/interested in a joint exercise plan?  I don't have weights and such, but I have a ton of land for walking and 50 lb bags of salt that I need to haul downstairs to our water purifier.  There's always the One Hundred Pushups program, too.

 :lmfao: Wellie!

I know what you mean. I have been cutting, splitting and then stacking wood. I am sore as all get-out. My wife calls it, "A good hurt." Well maybe for her  ;)

I'm not sure I believe in "good hurt". ;) But I'd rather do it now when I have the luxury of whining about it then when my physical strength could be the difference between taking care of my family and having my body give out in a crisis.

Witch,
I was getting ready to start my own trek to 100 push-ups but did not know there was a plan. I'll go in on the challenge with ya, let me know when to start and report.

You're on, DVC! :D  Shall we start tonight with the first test and then start the program tomorrow?  There's an app for your phone if you have a smart phone.  I'll post my (probably pretty sad) first test results tonight when I get off work. :)

Hey guys I would like to participate too.

I suggest we create a thread called "Push Up challenge" and we start posting there our results.
Ok I already created it hehe http://unchainedpreppers.com/forum/physical-fitness-challange/push-up-challenge

In the website they recommend to have a rest day between the test and starting the program because in the test you'll be going to failure.

Coolness APX!  Thanks. :)  So, we'll do the test tonight and start the challenge Wednesday?

DVC - I didn't realize the iPhone didn't have an app.  I tend to have Android blinders on. Glad you found one that will work!

For those of us with a torn rotator cuff that cannot do this hundred push up challenge, I suggest a hundred beer challenge.  I'm pretty sure I might fail this one miserably, but I'm willing to try

It's awesome that you all are participating in this, good luck!

Hundred beer challenge, now that is something I'd be great at!

Nice to see you again TG, sorry to hear about your rotator cuff. You getting surgery on it?

I've been checking the forum out from the cheap seats, figured I'd pop in and say hi ;D

Yep, looks like surgery for me.  I've been doing PT and cortisone shots with some success, but without surgery my major league baseball career is over.  I figured I'd give the PT another month and a half while I get things in order before having one arm immobilized for a while.  On the bright side, I can still flip people off and I'm practicing the old hook and rack method of working the slide on my pistol, using my one good hand and a sturdy pants pocket-- if it looks cool enough, there may be an instructional video in the future :))

Hope everyone's well!

Thanks WPW and welcome to the forum!!!

@ APX- it was smart to start a separate push up challenge thread-- sorry for taking things off topic on this one...
