N95 Masks
« on: February 29, 2020, 11:46:30 AM »
As I was surfing the TV channels I came across a woman, name and channel unknown that said the N95 masks don't protect you from the Coronavirus from others but protect them from you giving it to them.
I thought this was a ridicules statement.
I'm asking those of you with medical knowledge to give us the truth on this matter?

Mmmmmm, my thoughts which are from a nonmedical person.

I think the women hit it. I was watching a news show yesterday and as a backdrop the camera scanned a line of folks checking through the TSA check point at a airport. I think it was LAX. Anyway, most of the Asian looking folks had masks on. As the camera scanned we saw mask clad folks reaching in to rub their nose, mouth, etc. I saw several folks in line scratch the corners of their eyes too.

I broke out laughing and pointed it out to MrsMac who just shook her head.  :gasMask:

yeah the mask really are more to keep your sneezes, and coughs from spreading to others. Also the mask keep you from touching your mouth, nose face.
We wore them as emt and rescue people. It also helps if someone spits blood at you which has happened to us. We also wear face shields or eye protection too.  Most people don't wear the mask properly and testing the fit is important and most don't do the test to fit properly either.
Having facial hair is not allowed to properly fit it either.   Here is the proper way to test fit a mask. Its a very time intensive task. And if it fails you have to do it over again. Also there are different sizes to mask. Small medium large. Most people don't realize this.     https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xl4qX6qEYXU&t=5s.    Thats a link to the proper test to fit properly. :)

A surgical mask is only to keep the wearer from introducing spit, saliva or phlem onto someone else. Really doesnt filter anything, except errant blood drops or spray for a surgeon.
An N-95 mask with a tight facial seal will filter in both directions. An N-95 mask withe an exhaust valve will filter on inhaling but will not filter on exhale and can release particles onto others, but they are far more confortable to wear. Less heat and moisture build up.

Yeah surgical masks are to keep stuff you cough from going onto other people since most don’t cover their damn mouths. N95 masks actually will protect the wearer from INHALING most viruses IF they are fitted correctly. Meaning no facial hair. You would still need goggles to protect your eyes from other people’s coughing droplets everywhere. Most people don’t wash their hands after they pee, let alone after they cough all over them. Then they touch everything in sight. I spent way too much time in an airport recently if you couldn’t tell.
