allergy to insect stings
« on: June 04, 2012, 06:14:06 PM »
how will we deal with this if the S hits the F?

I don't have any links or any good info for you, just a thought I've been having.
My daughter got stung by a wasp for the first time yesterday. it was on the upper portion of her belly (she was outside swimming in her little kiddie pool)

no severe allergic reactions like an anaphylactic reaction seem to have occured, but the redness and swelling around the sting is a bit alarming. right now it's very dark red and the swollen area is about 1" tall by about 3" wide. all the reading I've done online today says that this is what's called a "large localized reaction" which isn't supposed to be very serious. basically just looks scarier than it is.

courtesy of WebMD:
Quote
    * A normal reaction will result in pain, swelling, and redness around the sting site.
    * A large local reaction will result in swelling that extends beyond the sting site. For example, a person stung on the ankle may have swelling of the entire leg. While it often looks alarming, it is generally no more serious than a normal reaction.
    * The most serious reaction to an insect sting is an allergic one (described below). This condition requires immediate medical attention.

anyway, it was on my mind and I just wanted to see if any of you guys have thought about this when putting together your medical preps.

Everything you needed for that is found in this thread:

Oral benadryl can help with a localized reaction, ice can help the pain and swelling.  Keep her out of the hot bath water for a few days as heat can exacerbate the histamine release.

Just keep an eye on it, on a rare occasion I have seen localized reactions cause tissue breakdown and result in infection.  If in doubt, go see her provider.

Hope she recovers quickly, those suckers hurt!

Walker

Eh.. this guy is such a dick, I can't believe what he said about... oh wait...

But really, thanks for the impromptu consult, you know better than I do that sometimes parents need to be reassured that everthing will be ok. If you need NOLA's address so you can send him a bill for services rendered just let me know! :o

After my wife reviewed my prep list she added a lot of things that I would have never even thought of. Its easy NOLA, to skip over many medical and other items.

I really wish we had some ladies on this forum to add another dimension.
