I was thinking that a civilized country like China would never wage conventional war. But based On the reactions of the Chinese people and it's government, I have changed my mind. They are getting a little to big for their Britches.

With Ken's comment on Japan's rank in owning our debt I did a little research. Here is the top five institutions/countries...

5. Japan
U.S. debt holdings: $1.083 trillion

4. Savings Bonds & Other Investors
U.S. debt holdings $1.102 trillion

3. China
U.S. debt holdings: $1.169 trillion

2. U.S. Federal Reserve
U.S. debt holdings: $1.659 trillion

1. Social Security Trust Funds
U.S. debt holdings: $2.67 trillion

Number one and two make me very concerned. Then to Ken's point look at number three and five; what is happening in Asia is  VERY scary. Can you imagine the scenario: Japan asks US for help...China tells Barry, "If you help Japan we are going to call in our notes!"

@JM, interesting list. Appearantly i was incorrect. It was my understanding that recently a suprising report came out that china is leaving the table and japan was the new #1 regaurding countries holding our debt.

Great observation about one or both demanding help or else.

Just so I am clear Ken I was not challenging your assertion about Japan being number one in holding US Bonds. My reason for posting what I did was to show how much of our debt was owned by our government. Man O' man that scares me.  :))

Either way those numbers are staggering!

I wish it was within my power to get that dept paid off. This is America for God's sake the world should owe us money not the other way round.

The easy solution TG is for the government to relax the reigns on the energy companies (Oil, Coal, Hydro, Gas) and let them drill/dig/build. If we did that our debt could be half of what it is today in ten years. A great example is South Dakota.

As you know debt is a good thing if it is managed correctly and 10 - 15% of GDP ($1.5 - $2T) would be perfect. Some say 20-25% of GDP would be best but I am conservative by nature and think not.

Today we are at $16T in debt with a GDP of around $15T. So we are at 106% of GDP. Very bad!

no matter how you slice it, its going to hurt really hard. such as a japan china war. we will be drawn into it some how either as support roll or we have to honor our treaty http://www.learner.org/workshops/primarysources/coldwar/docs/usjapan.html (http://www.learner.org/workshops/primarysources/coldwar/docs/usjapan.html) with japan to help them if one of there islands are taken. but when if it touches off whoever side we go agents they will dump our T-bills on the market causing a catastrophe.

Don't sweat it. War is a good thing for the economy. America was in a bad place economically before WW2 and then the economic boom of the 50s was born. Or so I have read.

It was good for us because the rest of the 1st world countries were flattened and we were jonny on the spot to rebuild them.

Yep, a World War, where almost every factory is turned over into making machinery, clothing, items and weapons for the war effort.  It sure would be interesting to see again, but it would also be really sad and scary.  We haven't seen that in a very long time.  Also, what if WE lose this time?  You have to contemplate that as well.  Do we have the necessary raw material productions here in American anymore or have we sold that out to other countries?  Do we have the natural resources and how long would it take us to get back to quickly and efficiently changing things over again to getting up those natural resources from our own country to supply us with those raw materials?  With the current idiots in power, I have my doubts we would win this time, seriously.  Plus, Obama would probably just say that we deserved to lose for all of America's pasts sins.  No kidding.

Mmmmm? Wasn't there a war always going on in 1984? If I remember, did the enemy change two or three times during the story?
