So apparently this happened in England, no I'm not talking about the killing tragedy. but the:
"His tweet offends me! I'm going to call the cops."
followed by them actually arresting some kid for what he wrote on twitter.
And now the British public seems all like "Yeah! he had it coming!"
Kinda looking in your direction Gadget...

"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances."
The First Amendment - United States Bill of Rights.
The US isn't perfect by a long shot, but we have some good starting points.
-
Yep.... It is getting a bit strange over here also.
We have to remember that there is no Bill of Rights over here. So the twitter post this guy did (not sure what it said), can be an offence in the legal system. It it was malicious.
-
what about the people that contacted the police? That is something that's actually malicious. dangerous.
"My hurt feelings allow for me to get you injured"
-
Offensive speech.. wtf!

Arresting people for internet comments is a common practice it seems.
Google search results for "Arrested for Facebook post":

One recent incident in particular that seems like fresh ground.

This is not new to me. Alex Jones has been reporting on Britain's draconian "hate speech" laws for years... but I guess informed equals crazy to some folks around here.
-
I've got a new way to look at this if i might share.
Best way to look at is a case of property rights, not free speech.
"free" speech doesn't exist anywhere I know of. The old example of "you can't yell fire in a crowded theater" situation holds true to that. It is dangerous to the persons, and detrimental to the business owner.
Same thing with political speech, a protestor doesn't have "the right" to yell obscenities at a private event. at least not something the property owner disagrees with.
So perhaps this/these cases online, are the respective governments staking their claim of "ownership" of the internet, which is very anarchic in it's nature.

That is a pretty good take on it I think.
As with most things new (Social Media etc..) the laws that apply to it are going to go through the overly free to draconian before they settle down.
The standards of what is considered illegal are evolving every day over here. It is a crime to threaten to kill someone in a face to face conversation. So the legal system is trying to clamp down on that in the digital world.
I don't know what was in the guys tweet, so not sure if the arrest was overboard or not.

@ Chicopee Man Faces Charges...
Like what you wrote Burt and would like to add something else to it.
The man will be charged. This will be the reason for the search warrant for his place of residence.
If the police find anything there well he will be in a big heap of trouble. If they do not find anything for an extended charges they will drag his ass to court and make his life miserable for awhile and then drop the case.
As distasteful I find the comment, since the threat was not specific to a officer or group of officers; This charge has no wings.
This instance and many others across the country will be a shot across the bow of internet users. Watch as "the man" chips away at your freedoms.
