I am resurrecting this subject line from the archives on toilet paper. Well worth further discussion from the group. JohnyMac - August 11, 2016

If anybody needs TP come to my house. MrsMac has a TP fetish. When ever it is on sale she just doesn't buy one or two rolls the buys A LOT! We have enough for YEARS.

I never understood people's fascination with toilet paper, and the irrational fear of not having any. You want to know how many rolls of TP I have prepped? 0

Am I missing something?

*shudder*  I have TP stockpiled, too.  Depending on my mood I look at the shelf in the basement and think I'll never run out, or that I don't have enough by half! :)  No offense Grudgie, but when SHTF I'm not shaking your hand!

First it was your obsession with the feeling of thick hard wood between your fingers... and now it's your ass-sphincter callouses.   :trolling:

The vast amount of the worlds citizens do not use TP. They use water.

My brother told me that most homes in the Philippines have flush toilets however few have TP.

Next to each toilet there is a bucket of water with a 4 - 5 oz. ladle. They use the water for rinse and there hands to scrub.

Keep in mind that TP is not good for your septic system even if you are using single ply "Scott 1000" type. The double and triple layered stuff is guaranteed to clog your leech field.

Now that is for folks who have a septic system. Folks with city sewage well you are screwed when that sewage system fails during a TEOTWAWKI drama.

Keep in mind that we are more likely to suffer a SHTF scenario than a TEOTWAWKI one. Just my opinion.

I keep a small GHB under the back seat of the truck.  It has about half a roll of TP in it.  Slide the cardboard tube out and they collapse to half.  You just never know.

TP will be a major "need" by most folks when whatever is going to happen does.  Me and wife live by ourselves and I have a fair pile.  She is of a certain age and doesn't need those ladies only items.  A somewhat small? supply of those are in storage also.  Talk about what I see as an excellent trade item about week 3.

Most home supplies will last week 1, walmart loot week 2.  Thats why I say week 3.  As I understand it anyway.

I like to keep several rolls in my GHB and BOB. But as far as storing large quantities I dont. I'm thinking of using personal hygiene cloths with a bucket of water with powdered bleach for sanitizing. Use your rag then sanitize and hang to dry. Not the best method but its what I can manage in the poop department. Anyone have other ideas?

Dig a hole.

Build a small house around it.

Build a bench in the small house with a hole in it that goes strait down into the hole in the ground.

Move the seat from the bathroom to the bench with the hole in it in small house over the hole in the ground.

Buy and store LOTS of TP.  Even if you have excess it will quickly become a great value barter item.

Excellent article on how to build an outhouse or privy.

http://www.motherearthnews.com/homesteading-and-livestock/building-an-outhouse-zmaz72jmazraw.aspx

Some key points:
(1) A privy should always be located so that it will not pollute any domestic water supply. Generally this means that the outhouse should always be on the downgrade side of the water supply and at least 100 feet from it.

(3) The best privies are fly-tight and constructed to remain that way. Flies and mosquitoes which breed on human waste can carry typhoid fever, dysentery, and other bad news. Pit Privy mosquitoes can be controlled by pouring a cup of kerosene into the cavity every ten days or so.
(My $0.02 - I wonder if there's something other than kerosene you can use.  If things are bad enough that we're building a privy, I don't know that we'll be able to get kerosene.)

I get the concepts of out houses, privies, chemical  toilets and whatnot. I was curious about the actual cleaning of oneself after using one of the aforementioned. Im looking to add a few extra ideas to the hygiene plan.

Paper of various sorts has long been used - the article to which I linked addresses best papers for the job.  Sponges and washcloths, too, have been used.  There are even people who use cloths with modern bathrooms.  You can Google it and find the occasional article about how it's handled.  I read up on it a while ago and decided, "hell no, not for me" unless I have to.  You could always install a bidet, though I think that's rather water-intensive.
