What's Your Sign?
« on: December 22, 2012, 08:17:17 PM »
Signs. "Support Our Troops", "Hot Dogs, 2 For A Dollar", "Go Team", "Turn Left", "Watch Your Step", "Right Turn Only", "Free Admission", "Handicap Parking". I could go on and on. There are MILLIONS of signs used everyday, by ALL of us. Helpful, informative, used to convey feelings, directions, warnings, etc. Then there are signs that cut to the quick, invoke a certain emotion in all of us, good or bad. Yet, these signs, as disturbing as they can be, are LEGAL. It is our 1st Amendment right to make, have, or show these signs. If they bother you, oh well, they are our 1st Amendment right. UNTIL NOW! You've all seen the Westboro Baptist's signs. "Than God for IEDs", "Thank God for 911", and to some, even "Thank God" is offensive. Maybe it's time to get rid of the 1st Amendment, after all, even though signs are used by all of us, it is plain to see that some of them are misused and despised by probably 99% of us. You could argue that signs are used by responsible people everyday, and they don't offend anybody. You could argue that signs don't kill anybody. I'm sure that somebody has been looking at a sexy woman on a billboard and hit somebody else head-on. Or somebody has been confused by a traffic sign and ended up killing somebody or has been killed themselves. Nope, it's time to get rid of the 1st Amendment. Maybe Obama can put Joe Biden in charge of a task force to look into the harm the 1st Amendment is doing. He could take violence out of movies, he could stop "Occupy Wall Street". He could stop pesky letters to the government. If Hollywood and the mainstream media doesn't like it, well, they're just going to have to understand. They'll just have the offensive signs to thank. We can't continue to go to work and school, worrying that the 1st Amendment is going to be used by some irresponsible individual. The government needs to step in right now and tell us what we can say, if and when we can pray, and to what we can pray to. After all, what did we elect these people in to office for in the first place? Come on Washington, do your job!

You are saying things that I disagree with and therefore I want to inflict physical harm upon you.

Good point. we consider the 2nd ammendment expendable because a select few abuse it. But freedom of speach is never on the chopping block when thugs communicate on social networks to create flash mobs to assault as many people as possible. You could easily argue the 1st is more dangerous then the 2nd. But one things for sure. You lose the 2nd then you also lost the 1st.

I agree HJ, I'm starting to think that we shouldn't have any rights.  In fact, the administration should make all decisions for us including who's in charge and for how long.  Rights are dangerous, and people make bad decisions all the time.  It'd save a ton of money if we eliminated the electoral process and due process.  Hell, it'd probably pay off the nation's debts if all our collateral became the governments, ownership is such an antiquated concept anyway- land, house, car, who needs em.  I will gladly give up the joys of life, my freedom, my possessions, and the endless opportunities I have in order to feel safe from the actions of others and myself.  Who's with me?  Never mind, it doesn't matter what you all think anyhow cause Barry and the government's with me...  licking their chops and waiting in the wings...  >:D

Exactly Ken! And before this goes any further and everyone thinks I am against the 1st Amendment, I'm not. I was being 100% facetious. I am 100% for all of our rights. I was using the lefts pathetic argument about the 2nd Amendment to point out how ridiculous it is, by replacing guns with signs. They can't even start to see our side of the argument, (they don't want to) but if you used their talking points to argue against the 1st Amendment. They would be in an uproar. The whole post is to point out how crazy their way of thinking is. To reiterate, I AM 100% FOR ALL OF OUR RIGHTS.

I got it. I was disagreeing with what you were pretending to say. Sorry if that wasn't clear. It is true that they don't want to hear our side. But then agian nobody anywhere ever wants to hear the other side.

I thought there might have been a misunderstanding there. That's a good thing, that it got you riled. Anybody should be upset when one of there rights is under attack. I get pissed everyday, when I hear the morons talking against guns and the 2nd Amendment.

Talking about denying basic human rights for a false sense of security, there is a book called "The Giver" that is along the same lines as 1984.  It's about a society that chooses jobs for everyone when they turn 13 or so, one job of which is that of the giver, a person who is used as a vesicle for everyone else's feelings so they never have to experience pain, or be scared, or be happy, or love.  The boy who is chosen to fulfill that role has to deal with everyone's heavy burdens and decide whether his society is right for denying everyone these "gifts".  Other common practices in the society are disposing of babies with physical and mental defects at birth and offing folks when they reach what we'd consider middle-age, regardless of their health.

I read it for school around the same time I had to read 1984, the jungle, animal farm.  It's a pretty quick read and a good reminder of why pain, loss, heartache are necessary for us to appreciate all of the wonderful things in life.  Folks are always trying to find ways to prevent, erase, forget the bad things with more laws, bans, prescription drugs, etc... but really we end up denying ourselves the full experience- embrace the suck, soldier up, and move on.  No matter how hard it seems, it's always worth it if you want it to be.

I wonder if they still have kids reading those books or if they've all been used as kindling...

I've read Animal Farm, I love it, the moral, the plot, and it shows the evils of communism. Animal Farm is one my favorite books.
