Favorite news sources
« on: March 14, 2014, 05:34:57 PM »
I wanted to share my favorite news sources.  I like to check the starred ones daily, and the non-starred ones at least once a week to try and avoid the "filter bubble" effect.  I know this is a lot.  Typically I will visit my regular sites in the morning and, if it's slow at work, a couple of the others in the afternoon.  For the most part, these are all mainstream journalistic sites, in English.  Do you have any sites you visit regularly for news?

US-based mainstream
http://abcnews.com/ - ABC News
http://www.cbsnews.com/ - CBS News
http://www.nbcnews.com/ - NBC News/I *hate* their redesign. I used to visit this one daily, but now find it nearly unreadable
http://www.foxnews.com/ - Fox News/I have to force myself to read this one - it's not what I'd call real news, but it's important to know what they're putting out there.
* http://www.cnn.com/
http://www.washingtonpost.com/ - Washington Post
http://www.washingtontimes.com/ - Washington Times (conservative to WaPo's liberal)

(There's tons of other newspapers out there, NY Times, etc. and of course there's Reuters & A.P., but this list isn't an exhaustive resource, just my favorites.)

US-based, less mainstream and/or less news-oriented
http://www.motherjones.com/ - Mother Jones News Left leaning, investigative reporting, but slightly conspiracy-theorist
http://spaceweather.com/ - Space Weather
* http://online.wsj.com - Wall Street Journal/unfortunately most info is behind a paywall, but even the headlines can be interesting
http://www.bloomberg.com/ - Bloomberg/financial and other news
http://www.npr.org/ - NPR/Less news-y, more public interest stuff

Foreign news organizations
Good for both seeing what is going on around the world, and how the world sees the US.  As a side note, if you browse in Google Chrome, you can go to the main sites of many foreign news organizations and get an easy translation!
* http://www.dw.de/ - Deutsche Welle/Germany, in English
http://www.spiegel.de/international/ - Der Speigel/Germany, in English
* http://www.theguardian.com/us - Guardian/England (US focused page)
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/ - The Telegraph/England
http://www3.nhk.or.jp/nhkworld/ - NHK/Japan
http://elpais.com/elpais/inenglish.html - El PaĆs/Spain, very limited English content, but still interesting.
* http://america.aljazeera.com/ - Al Jazeera America/Arab based, US focused
http://www.france24.com/en/ - France 24/France
http://english.peopledaily.com.cn/ - People's Daily Online/China
http://www.xinhuanet.com/english/ - Xinhua/China

Found/Not Yet Read
In compiling the links for this post I found that Africa, India, and South America are areas I really need to improve my coverage.  I also could improve my western European and non-US North American coverage.  I found a couple of sites that I am going to look into and possibly add to my regular reading.

http://allafrica.com/ - African news
http://indiancountrytodaymedianetwork.com/ - Native American news
http://indianexpress.com/ - The Indian Express/India
http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/international-home - The Times of India/India
