Gun Safety Class at an Indiana School, 1956

I guess someone realized that "pictures or it didn't happen" would eventually even lend itself to firearms in the school place.

Yes, well here is proof that Gun Safety was directly taught to young children in the Indiana Public School system.

Its hard to believe the Hoplophobic Public School Systems that we have now, and its also sad to see how far we've fallen in just over 50 years.  I sure wish I grew up in that America instead of the one that we have now.  Fairly cool pictures.

Wish we still taught Gun Safety and maybe even later, say at 18 years old, taught our students how they could go out and get a firearm carry license once they turned 21 and carry a handgun for self-defense.  Of course, our now hoplophobic Public School system would never do anything like that.

While in High School one of the semesters each year in Phys Ed you could take the NRA hunter Safety class taught at the school.

I know that I have shared this memory before but: I can remember getting on the bus in the AM with my 12 ga. shotgun, drop it off to the VP office, pick it up at the end of the school day and take my buddies bus to his house. We would go small game hunting. Nobody ever gave me a second glance.  :))

Wow, I love to see those old pictures.

Here in Argentina in the '50s you could go to the government shooting ranges and ask for a Mauser and box of rounds  to practice all for free, and the highschools had obligatory shooting classes.

In all the government shooting ranges main entries it says "Here you learn to defend the country" in big letters, now you only learn how to expend big bucks in the membership :D

And Ken,

once you passed the NRA safety class you could take a semester of archery. The school supplied bows and arrows. In those days they were not compound bows but cheap recurve ones. You could also bring your own bow to school to use in lieu of the shitty ones that the school provided.

In the 70's you could not use compound bows for hunting in PA. only recurve or traditional bows. I do not know when they were made legal for hunting in PA. as I moved from there to Seattle in 1980 but they are now.

Oh, I almost forgot- About half of the archery class was made up of young ladies. You see they took the NRA Hunter Safety class because you didn't need to get into gym clothes and then shower post the class. Same thing for taking the archery class.  :))

pretty cool... i think they really should offer the hunter safety course again..kind of like they offer the drivers Ed course now... you go through the course and at the end you get your hunters license. that would be great. and since its a full semester course they could really get into the nitty gritty of different rifles...how to shoot etc...
