WASHINGTON (AP) -- President Barack Obama on Friday declared an end to the Iraq war, one of the longest and most divisive conflicts in U.S. history, announcing that all U.S. troops would be withdrawn from the country by year's end.

Obama's statement put an end to months of wrangling over whether the U.S. would maintain a force in Iraq beyond 2011.

"After nearly nine years," the president, "America's war in Iraq will be over."

Anyone think that he's doing this to buy votes? And does anyone think that "something" will happen, keeping U.S. soldiers in Iraq? Maybe I'm looking too deep into this, but it just seems odd to me.

We'll see if he actually goes through with it. He's been promising this and that since the 2008 campaign.

This is definitely a vote-buying scheme for his base.  Besides, like I said in the other thread, he indicated Iraq and those of you who've been paying attention should have the feeling that something might be going down in Iran pretty soon.
