With news of the ISIS plot to randomly abduct members of the Australian public and behead them, Australian sentiment on guns is dramatically shifting. It appears Australians are finally understanding the importance of gun ownership, and craving it at a time when the world is increasingly unsafe.

I dunno how impartial is the source, but sadly the only way people will understand that they need to take care of their own safety is by facing shitty situations where they can realize that police won't be there to help you.

There is a push for better (IE more relaxed) gun laws here in Oz, whether or not anything will come of it is anyone's guess.

Personally ISIS doesn't worry me, at least not directly, if they do anything it will be in the cities and I almost never go into one.

And we are armed, or at least lot of people are, not with AR/AKs I admit but we can still own some pretty good gear, for example this Aussie-made toy is about to be released.

Yeah yeah I know, it' not semi auto, but remember in Oz nobody else has semi-autos either (well I'm sure some people do but not as a rule). So like the two guys running from a lion, I only have to run faster than the other bloke, not the lion. By owning even a few decent bolt/lever/pump/revolver-action rifles you are well ahead of the pack.

So despite the fact that I can't own an AR etc, I still feel pretty secure against most threats likely to be encountered in country Oz.

Graynomad, if that toy isn't a semi how do you cycle the spend brass and new round out of/into the chamber?

On another note: I have acquaintances around the world many of which live in countries with draconian gun laws. You would be surprised what they own. They just can't practise to openly with them.  ;)

It's a straight-pull bolt, options for bolt and ejection on either side, so I guess this one (a prototype) is the left bolt right eject version.

Yes I'm sure there are many people who "forgot" to hand in their semi-autos in 97, or who have acquired them since on the black market.

The police aren't there to protect you, they are there to catch those who already broke the law.
In principle, no less than in practice, socialism is the ideology of thieves and tyrants.

Absolutely, but most people these days believe the police is a phone order bodyguard :D

Yep, despite the feel good "Protect and serve" tag line on the cars.

I'm not having a go at them here, their presence and ROL in general certainly makes most places safer, but it's not physically possible to get there in time should a bad guy reckon he won't get caught or simply doesn't care about any consequences.
