Why I hate reading the news: A round-up of interesting articles
« on: September 13, 2016, 09:18:07 AM »
Just checking out the news this morning and read several recent articles that are of concern.  Not "grab your mags and bug out bags" concern, just overall worrying.  So, because misery loves company, enjoy this roundup of articles.

Less concerning, but along the same lines: Further Low Path Bird Flu Found in South African Ostriches

This one's a little technical and may cause MEGO*, so let me copy the relevant, concerning section.

It's the equivalent of lending a dollar and five cents to your neighbor, knowing that you'll only be repaid a dollar. It's further evidence, if it were needed, that the negative interest-rate policies being pursued by policy makers, including the European Central Bank, are making areas of the financial markets look increasingly similar to conditions prior to the financial crisis of almost a decade ago.

The mood music currently playing in the bond market is eerily reminiscent of what preceded the bankruptcy of Lehman Brothers and the financial destruction that followed. Back then, the financial community was sleepwalking into disaster, with few investors sounding the alarm bells until it was too late. Now, though, there's a chorus of smart investors pointing to the risks of complacency; as recently as Aug. 31, bond guru Bill Gross warned that investors were "treading on thin ice."

Depending on ones masochistic tendencies, it can become addicting searching out the challenges folks are having in your country and the other countries through-out the world. I tend to focus on economic drama's as I have a predisposed interest there. Others, it is medical, climate change et cetera.

The challenge is to know when to stop. Everything in moderation.  ;)

I hear you JM.  I love how the American news cycle works.
-
did anyone hear about the mass graves for over a thousand victims of the recent heatwave in pakistan?
it got so hot that asphalt is melting in some roadways in Asia. Coral bleaching is progressing faster than originally measured.  the fish in the reflecting pool in WDC died - it got too hot for them to survive.
how many average Americans know that a heatwave in France killed north of 15,000 people a few years back.  a recent report - by the Feds in the US of A - noted the generation known as the millennials (born 1980s-2004ish) will not likely die from old age.  - this may be scaremongering by the fading presidency here... but it is sobering.  This comes on the heels of the recent NASA/NOAA report.

I'm not sure where we are going as a civilization, only that the ride is getting to the top of the arch and gravity will soon take over.
